What's in a signature?
So I caught a discussion the other day on the definition of a Signature Fragrance. I've always heard it defined as the scent you wear all the time and that people associate with you. It's what you wear most often and would be the fragrance that people would describe you with. But the discussion presented an alternative definition that I find myself agreeing with. A signature scent should be something that you personally feel like represents the way you most want to smell. It's the fragrance that fits you like a glove and and makes you feel like... YOU. It may or may not be the thing you wear the most often - that would be your utility scent, not your signature. And it may or may not be the thing that other people associate with you. Instead, it is the fragrance that YOU most identify yourself with. As an example, the fragrance I love the most, and that makes me feel the most like ME, is Tom Ford's Black Orchid EDP and EDP Reserve. They are very similar, and I wear them interchangeably. But I only wear it on special occasions, or when I'm not planning much and will be mostly by myself for the day. (as a side note, I once wore it on a casual coffee date, and she told me it was the most beautiful scent she had ever smelled. I wear it now every time I know I'm going to see her). My utility fragrance - the one that I wear most often, and that I think more people would associate with me and how I smell, is Byredo Gypsy Water. I've worn that one more than any other fragrance I own, and have gone through nearly 1/3 of the bottle in a year. It's what I wear when I'm going to be around a lot of people, or when I'm meeting with a potential client, hanging out with my goddaughters, or just because it's Tuesday and I don't feel like spinning the fragrance wheel or playing games with my selection for the day. So what say you? How would you define your Signature? And have you found it, yet?
SOTD: City Rhythm KEY WEST !!!
Key West is a fun tropical fragrance that focuses more on the feeling of being on vacation than trying to reinvent the wheel. Right from the opening I get bright citrus and tropical fruits with a smooth, beachy vibe. As it dries down, it becomes creamier with light woods and musk that keep it clean and easy to wear. I don’t think it’s the most groundbreaking tropical fragrance, but it doesn’t have to be. It takes a familiar tropical DNA and does it well, with better quality than many designer offerings in this style. It never becomes overly sweet or heavy, which makes it comfortable even in hot weather. Performance is good for this type of scent. Don’t expect an all-day powerhouse, but it lasts long enough to enjoy without overwhelming the people around you. If you’re looking for a signature tropical scent with a polished, easygoing character, Key West is worth checking out. It may not be the most unique fragrance in my collection, but it’s one I can see myself reaching for whenever I want something that feels bright, carefree, and effortless. For me, I’d rate the longevity around 7.5/10. * Longevity: 6–8 hours on average, depending on your skin and the weather. * Projection: Strong for the first 1–2 hours, then settles into a moderate scent bubble. * Sillage: Moderate—noticeable without being overpowering. It’s not a beast-mode fragrance, but it performs better than many fresh tropical scents. The quality of the dry-down helps it stay enjoyable even after the brighter tropical opening fades. Taking into account what City Rhythm Key West is trying to be—a fresh, tropical, vacation-style fragrance—and the quality of the materials, I’d rate it: * Overall: 8.8/10 * Scent quality/ingredients: 9.0/10 – Smells well blended with a natural-feeling tropical accord and doesn’t come across as cheap or overly synthetic. * Originality: 8.3/10 – It’s not reinventing the tropical genre, but it has its own personality rather than feeling like a direct clone. * Performance: 7.5/10 – Good for a fresh scent, though not an all-day powerhouse.
