I'm Corinne Bach, voice instructor and founder of Bach School of Voice in Tampa, FL.
Most singers think their tone comes from their throat muscles. It doesn't. What actually creates your sound is the mucosal wave, a rippling motion along the soft outer layer of your vocal folds, moving anywhere from 100 to 1000 times per second. Your muscles only set the tension. The wave does the rest.
This is why pushing and gripping to get more sound backfires. The mucosa needs to be free to ripple. Gripping stops the wave entirely.
It's also why I focus so heavily on hydration and relaxation with every student. It's not a wellness add-on. It's the actual mechanics of how your voice works. A relaxed, well-hydrated mucosal layer waves freely, and the tone that comes out feels almost effortless.
I've watched students break through in a single session just by letting go of the push.
Your voice is not a muscle to force. It's a wave to free.
