SOTD: 7 Sailing Day by Maison Margiela 03/10/2025
Sailing Day by Maison Margiela is a well-crafted, albeit divisive, aquatic fragrance. It delivers on its promise to capture the memory of being on the sea, but it does so in a way that is more "clean" and "bubbly" than a traditional salty marine scent. This is super clean & fresh release from 2017, I couldnt find any credited perfumer! It opens up with an Aquatic accord, Aldehydes, Juniper & Red Pepper. The opening is a burst of fresh, clean, airy notes. The aldehydes create a bubbly, almost soapy quality, while the aquatic notes are a representation of salty sea spray & fresh ocean air. In the middle it contains heart notes of Coriander, Iris & Rose. These notes add a subtle complexity. The coriander provides a zesty, slightly spicy kick, while the iris &rose offer a soft, clean floral element that prevents the fragrance from becoming purely oceanic. The base is where it gets interesting. Red Seaweed, Ambergris, Amberwood & Cedar. The base notes are what ground the fragrance. The red seaweed is a key component, providing a unique, slightly salty/green quality. It's not a heavy or unpleasant seaweed scent, but rather a hint of the marine flora you might encounter near the coast. The ambergris and ambery wood add a touch of warmth and a mineralic, salty depth. Although its a nice well blended fragrance like many of the replica range the edt performance is a let down, The price point is in my opinion out of touch. You could easily get similar fragrances at a better price or performance. Take some of the ADG line, Nautica Voyage or even Davidoffs Coolwater for a budget friendly Option.
