Questions for Marcelo Oillataguerre
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya’! So this next meetup is a pretty cool opportunity to talk with @Marcelo Oillataguerre , aka, The Niche Fragrance Collector, and since time will be limited, I personally don’t want to waste the moment asking the usual “what’s your favorite fragrance?” type of questions! Don’t get me wrong, favorite scent questions are fun. We all love hearing what someone with a serious nose reaches for. But when you’re talking to someone who has smelled deep into the niche world, traveled through a lot of brands, explored different styles and built a real point of view around fragrance, I think the better question is not just 'what do you like?' It’s more like 'how do you think about fragrance now?' Right now, one question I’m leaning toward is this: ----------“With niche fragrance becoming more mainstream and more expensive, what separates a truly artistic niche release from one that is just wearing the "costume" of niche?”---------- That one interests me because we are living in a strange fragrance era. Everything is “exclusive,” everything is “extrait,” everything has a dramatic bottle, a moody campaign and a price tag that looks like it comes with a monthly payment plan. But does that automatically make it art? Or are some brands just throwing on a velvet jacket and charging admission? The other question I’m considering is: ----------“After smelling as much as you have, what has changed the most about your own taste over the years?”---------- Because honestly, that might be the real collector question. Most of us start this hobby chasing compliments, performance, hype or whatever bottle the algorithm keeps shoving in our faces. But over time, your nose changes. Your patience changes. Your standards change. Sometimes the fragrance you've ignored two years ago becomes the one that finally makes sense! What say you, guys? If you only had a few minutes with a serious niche fragrance reviewer, what would you ask? Would you go for something practical, like underrated houses and buying advice, or would you ask something deeper about artistry, taste and the direction of the hobby? Conversely, what is one fragrance reviewer question you are absolutely tired of hearing? Love to hear from ya'!

Scent of the Day!
It's a muggy 88 degrees here so I reached for one of my favorite fresh fragrances. Nautica Voyage will always be one of my go to scents on a hot day.

SOTD: Y Iced Cologne by Yves Saint Laurent 31/05/2026
I’ve never been a huge fan of the Y line; I remember trying one previously that was just way too heavy on the lavender for my taste. However, after handing out some samples of the new Y Iced Cologne to my boys and seeing them enjoy it, I figured I’d give it a fair shot myself. Released in early 2026, this flanker is positioned as an "EDT Intense" alternative to the denser Elixir and EDP versions, aiming to bottle the sensation of liquid ice. It’s crafted by Dominique Ropion, the guy behind the original Y DNA and my personal favorite, La Nuit de l'Homme, but this iteration feels much sharper and more minimalist than its predecessors. As an Aromatic Fougère, this scent ditches the usual fruity sweetness of the Y line in favor of a serious chill. The opening is a sharp, immediate blast of fresh ice mint and Arctical, a molecule designed to mimic frozen air. As it moves into the heart, the Ourika Living Mint and blue sage take over, offering a crisp, botanical greenness that feels more natural than synthetic. The dry down is predictable but effective, relying on the signature "blue" base of Ambroxan and Indonesian patchouli. It keeps things clean and slightly woody, ensuring that the icy vibe doesn't just disappear the moment the top notes evaporate. In terms of performance, YSL’s claim of "12-hour intensity" feels like a stretch to me. In my experience, it’s more of a 4 to 5 hour performer, which is actually quite respectable for a fresh fragrance. It projects well for the first hour before settling into a consistent, clean scent bubble. It’s a perfect reach for the gym or a high-heat office day during the summer, especially since that mentholated cooling sensation actually lingers into the mid-notes. I had previously stated that at €115 for 100ml, it feels overpriced when you have alternatives like Hawas Ice or Montblanc Legend Blue available for much less. It’s a nice addition if you find it on sale, but at retail price, I’d probably pass. Well I did manage to pick it up on a great deal, so it now sits on the shelf.

SOTD: Teriaq Intense by Lattafa 14/12/2025
You don't normally get the name of the creator with these ME fragrances, but this one has been associated with a rather famous perfumer, responsible for most of the JPG Le Male line, the entire Carolina Herrera Good Girl/Bad Boy range and a few Azzaro to name but a few. Yes this is a Quentin Bisch creation. If you love boozy, spicy, and sweet gourmand fragrances, especially those with a prominent plum note, then you are in look. Teriaq Intense is an Oriental Spicy fragrance that is rich, boozy, sweet, and warm. The opening provides a quick lift with the freshness of bergamot, which is immediately warmed and given a slightly metallic/leathery depth by the luxurious saffron. The heart is where the scent truly shines, featuring a boozy plum liquor note. This is refined, not a harsh alcoholic smell, and blends beautifully with the comforting, spicy warmth of cinnamon. This for me is the most addictive part of the fragrance. The dry-down is luxurious, long-lasting, and smooth. Tonka bean adds a creamy, vanilla-like sweetness, while amber and benzoin provide a resinous, balsamic warmth that anchors the entire fragrance. This is not a clone or dupe for Khamrah, but if you were to make a comparision, this has more dept and less sharpness. It smells and lasts well above its price. I get a good 6+ hours out of this one of course my hoodie is so well hydrated, it always lasts longer there. It projects well, especially in the first few hours, and leaves a noticeable, intoxicating scent trail. Autumn, Winter is the optimal time for this too shine and it's perfect for evening wear. Anyone looking for a high-quality, masterfully blended Middle Eastern fragrance at an affordable price point, then look no further. Lattafa hit the nail on the head with this one. My Rating: 8/10 Scent: 2.5 Longevity: 2.5 Sillage: 2 Y/N: 1
