Questions for Marcelo Oillataguerre
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya’! So this next meetup is a pretty cool opportunity to talk with @Marcelo Oillataguerre , aka, The Niche Fragrance Collector, and since time will be limited, I personally don’t want to waste the moment asking the usual “what’s your favorite fragrance?” type of questions! Don’t get me wrong, favorite scent questions are fun. We all love hearing what someone with a serious nose reaches for. But when you’re talking to someone who has smelled deep into the niche world, traveled through a lot of brands, explored different styles and built a real point of view around fragrance, I think the better question is not just 'what do you like?' It’s more like 'how do you think about fragrance now?' Right now, one question I’m leaning toward is this: ----------“With niche fragrance becoming more mainstream and more expensive, what separates a truly artistic niche release from one that is just wearing the "costume" of niche?”---------- That one interests me because we are living in a strange fragrance era. Everything is “exclusive,” everything is “extrait,” everything has a dramatic bottle, a moody campaign and a price tag that looks like it comes with a monthly payment plan. But does that automatically make it art? Or are some brands just throwing on a velvet jacket and charging admission? The other question I’m considering is: ----------“After smelling as much as you have, what has changed the most about your own taste over the years?”---------- Because honestly, that might be the real collector question. Most of us start this hobby chasing compliments, performance, hype or whatever bottle the algorithm keeps shoving in our faces. But over time, your nose changes. Your patience changes. Your standards change. Sometimes the fragrance you've ignored two years ago becomes the one that finally makes sense! What say you, guys? If you only had a few minutes with a serious niche fragrance reviewer, what would you ask? Would you go for something practical, like underrated houses and buying advice, or would you ask something deeper about artistry, taste and the direction of the hobby? Conversely, what is one fragrance reviewer question you are absolutely tired of hearing? Love to hear from ya'!

SOTD: Bold Citrus by Hugo Boss 29/05/2026
Boss Bottled Bold Citrus was released in early 2025 as a reimagining of the classic DNA, aiming to capture a sun-drenched, vibrant freshness. It was co-created by perfumers Sophie Labbé and Honorine Blanc, who clearly tried to pivot away from the traditional apple-heavy identity toward something more zesty. While I was excited for a more natural take on the line, I found it a bit disappointing in practice. As someone whose skin tends to "eat" citrus notes, the bright elements unfortunately burned off much faster than I had hoped, leaving me wanting more from this limited edition release. The scent opens with a dominant Primofiore lemon and bergamot blend, which provides a sparkling, natural-feeling zing that feels far more modern than the original EDT. However, once that initial citrus explosion fades, the fragrance transitions into a greener, more resinous heart. I noticed the Geranium Bourbon adding a distinct floral crispness, while the Elemi extract provided a honeyed warmth that prevented it from being too sharp. The dry down stays very safe and familiar, leaning on the reliable Boss foundation of vetiver and patchouli, which gives it the weight you would expect from an Eau de Parfum concentration. In terms of performance, I get about five hours on my skin, which is why I usually have to go heavy on the sprayer to make it last through the day. It has a strong, punchy presence for the first 90 minutes, but it quickly settles into a moderate, professional scent bubble that makes it very office-friendly. It is definitely a high-summer fragrance, best suited for outdoor casual events or daytime wear in the heat. Even though it's a solid, functional scent, it didn't quite live up to the hype for me; it feels a bit too "safe," and combined with the recent lavender-heavy releases, it’s made me lose a bit of interest in where the line is heading. My Rating 6/10 Scent 2.5 Longevity 1.5 Sillage 1 Y/N 1

SOTD- Tabac Sahara by Guerlain
Another banger from the house of Guerlain Paris. I’ve been on a bit of an exploration streak, trying out the raspberry/leather incense smoke DNA, from the likes of scents such as Ombre Nomade, Cuir Infrarouge, and eventually coming to this absolute masterpiece from Guerlain. It’s edible, smoky, almost slightly barbecue like in the opening. It’s intense and loud, and a beautiful contrast between a sour raspberry and light citrus, bridged nicely with a heavy, smoky tobacco heart with rose nuances, connected to a base of ambergris, amber, and wood. Out of all of the DNA’s in this realm, this one is unique in its own level. It’s a beautiful, artistic scene. Incredibly strong performance as well. Not blind buy safe at all, but signature scent worthy. I’m considering placing this as a winter artistic signature for me, although it’s fighting for that spot with Ombre Nomade lol. Absolutely beautiful scent. Guerlain has never missed. Highly recommend for my smoke lovers, and artistic enjoyers.
