Growth Mindset | Learning "YET"
🌱 Hey, happy Friday everyone!
And for my fellow Canadians — happy long weekend! 🍁
Since we’re diving into growth mindset this month, I want us to start by just… noticing. You can’t grow from something you haven’t noticed yet, right?
So here’s the challenge: instead of rushing to reframe into growth mode, just observe when those fixed mindset statements pop up.
🧠 Fixed Mindset in Real Life Sounds Like…
💭 “That’s just the way I am.”
👉 (I’m not a morning person / I’m disorganized by nature)
💭 “I’m either good at it or I’m not.”
👉 (I’m not athletic / I’ll never be good at yoga)
💭 “I’m not a math person.”
👉 (I can’t track macros / Nutrition labels confuse me / I’m bad at portion sizes)
💭 “I can’t do this.”
👉 (I’ll never stick to meal prep / I can’t meditate / I’ll never keep a routine)
💭 “If I don’t get it right away, I never will.”
👉 (I burned that recipe once so I can’t cook / I tried
journaling and quit / Strength training feels awkward)
💭 “I’m too old to change.”
👉 (It’s too late to start exercising / I can’t learn new recipes / I’ll never get techy with apps)
💭 “I’m just not a disciplined person.”
👉 (I’ll always be a snacker / I can’t stick to bedtime routines / I’ll never be consistent with workouts)
💭 “It’s easy for them — they’re naturally talented.”
👉 (She just loves working out / He actually enjoys cooking)
💭 “If I fail, it means I’m a failure.”
👉 (I missed two workouts so I’ll never stick with fitness / I had dessert so I blew my diet)
💭 “Some people have it, some people don’t.”
👉 (They’re naturally thin / I just don’t have the metabolism for that)
💭 “I’ve always been this way.”
👉 (I’ve always had a sweet tooth / I’ve always hated exercise)
💭 “This is impossible.”
👉 (I can’t cut down on caffeine / I’ll never manage stress better)
💭 “Effort means I’m not smart.”
👉 (If I need a coach or a plan, it means I’m not motivated enough)
💭 “I’ll never be able to do that.”
👉 (I’ll never run a 5K / I’ll never cook from scratch / I’ll never meditate)
💭 “Why even try if I might fail?”
👉 (I’ll just fall off the wagon again / Why bother meal planning if I won’t stick to it)
🌱 The Power of Yet
We’ve been looking at those sneaky fixed mindset statements this week — the ones that sound like:
💭 “I can’t do this.”💭 “I’m not athletic.”💭 “I’ve always been this way.”
And here’s the thing… there are lots of ways to reframe. But the easiest one?
👉 Just add YET (A Carol Dweck Famous Touch).
✨ “I can’t do this… yet.”✨ “I’m not athletic… yet.”✨ “I’ve always been this way… but not forever.”
That one tiny word cracks the door open. It’s easy, it feels doable, and it shifts you back into possibility.
So if you catch yourself this weekend in a fixed-mindset moment — pause, smile, and try tagging on a little yet. 💛
Which fixed mindset statement do you catch yourself saying the most? Notice any creep up in very particular situations? I'll share mine in the comment. I'd love to hear yours.
