We often assume these principles are common knowledge, but the evidence suggests otherwise. This reminds me of the distinction between the Golden Rule and the Platinum Rule. The Golden Rule tells us to treat others as we would like to be treated. The Platinum Rule goes a step further, encouraging us to treat others as they would like to be treated. In the same way, many style enthusiasts assume others possess the same foundational knowledge of clothing, fit, color coordination, and presentation that they do. They do not. If we genuinely wish to elevate the standard of dress among men, we must begin where they are, not where we assume they should be. Style, after all, is not an innate gift bestowed upon a fortunate few. It is a learned discipline—a combination of education, observation, and deliberate practice. Before a man can master the nuances of texture, proportion, and color harmony, he must first be taught the fundamentals. Only then can he develop a wardrobe that not only reflects his personality but also communicates confidence, competence, and respect for both himself and those around him.
