Travel outfit for a last-minute trip . . . Today I found myself on a flight to Guatemala City, accompanying seven kids whose parents were deported from the US in August. The folks doing the deporting made no provision for the kids, who were left stranded in Palm Beach County. No matter where you are on the political spectrum, this has to be recognized as heartless and deplorable. My sister works with a social service NGO that supports migrant farmworkers, which stepped in to care for the kinds and reunite them with their parents (again, without an ounce of help from the government). I went at my sister’s request as I’m a lawyer and a fast talker and those attributes could have come in handy in a pinch. Fortunately, we delivered the kids without incident and they are currently in a hired car driving back with their parents to their home village, seven hours to the north of Guatemala City. I’ll be back in Miami tomorrow.
