For the community the ceremony has a very long history that has been handed down from the German immigrants who settled the area. The tuxedo and top hats are a sign of respect and reverence for the fun and admittedly silly tradition. Those men are not just volunteers, they are selected by their fellow citizens for their contributions, service and commitment to the community. They serve for life and are considered the best the town has to offer. They take the responsibility and honor given them by their neighbors seriously even as they perform their duties with joy and knowing wink. For 140 years the tradition has been going strong and these men are just stewards keeping the lamps lit for future generations and inspiring others to life for their communities. It would be great to see more of that in America.
