Spent yesterday celebrating my Nephew's 16th birthday. He wants to copy me and do Kilimanjaro but has settled for a cross country hike in May for Alzheimer's Research for now ๐
and asked if I'd help him get some practice in. ๐ช๐ผ
To the Valleys!
This was a win on 2 fronts, the opportunity to get out on the 1st proper hike of the year. As his hike is for my beautiful Welsh firecracker Nan who passed away 2 weeks before her 100th birthday, we went for the 4 waterfalls trek.
๐ฅพ 10KM trekked over moderate terrain.
๐ช 575 stair steps (please enjoy the smugness of a teenager with 2 working knees and no pack)
๐ชจ 1 good valley wall boulder/scramble because seriously fk those stairs ๐
)
๐ 8 rainbows found, permission to be silly returned to a grumpy teenager.
Secondly my Nephew had the opportunity to just talk. 1 hour 45 minutes about football...met with enthusiasm and encouragement which then turned into an hour about his girlfriend, his concerns about her meeting his parents & grandparents. Then conversations he's had at school around rape, racism, abortion, drugs, shutting down sexism, why his Dad & Grandad are the way they are and why it's ok that he isn't like that, what he wants to do after his GCSE's, travel plans.
Such a powerful reminder that when we shut down small conversations we can roadblock the important ones.
