A lot of people are told:
“Just take a breath.”
“Just calm down.”
But if you’ve ever tried that when you’re overwhelmed, you already know it doesn’t always work.
And it’s not because you’re doing it wrong, it’s because your body’s state matters.
Very simply, most of us move through different states throughout the day:
🔥 Overwhelmed / on edge: anxious, tense, everything feels like a lot
💚 Steady / okay: more present, able to think and respond
🧊 Shut down / low energy: tired, heavy, checked out
But here’s the part that changes everything: What helps in one state can make another state feel worse.
If you’re overwhelmed and someone tells you to “just calm down”, it can feel frustrating or impossible.
Because your body may actually need to release some of that built-up energy first before it can settle.
And if you’re in a low, shut-down state, slowing down even more usually isn’t what helps either.
You might need to gently bring your energy back up instead.
So it’s not that regulation is hard, it’s that it’s more nuanced than we’ve been taught.
Once you start matching what you do to what your body actually needs in the moment, things begin to make a lot more sense.
