…𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙝𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮’𝙙 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪?⁣

Yesterday’s Quiet Time asked me a question I wasn’t expecting to hit quite so hard:⁣

⁣

𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦?⁣

⁣

And almost immediately, Holy Spirit brought an old hurt back to my attention.⁣

⁣

There was a time when I wanted something deeply from someone I loved.⁣

⁣

So I tried to do the right things.⁣

I made the right choices.⁣

I loved well.⁣

I gave.⁣

I showed up.⁣

⁣

And underneath all of it was a hope I didn’t really know how to name at the time:⁣

⁣

𝘐𝘧 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥.⁣

More specifically…⁣

⁣

“𝙄𝙛 𝙄 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨, 𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 — 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.”⁣

Oof.⁣

⁣

Because suddenly I could see it.⁣

Doing the right thing wasn’t the problem.⁣

Loving someone wasn’t the problem.⁣

Wanting affection wasn’t the problem.⁣

⁣

The painful part was that I had quietly made someone else’s response the proof that I was loved.⁣

⁣

So if I gave enough…⁣

loved enough…⁣

did enough “right” things…⁣

⁣

maybe I’d finally get the response that made me feel safe in that love.⁣

⁣

And when I didn’t?⁣

⁣

Well, you can imagine what that did inside me.⁣

⁣

Today, instead of trying to fix that old hurt myself, I brought it back to Holy Spirit.⁣

⁣

I asked:⁣

⁣

“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦?”⁣

⁣

And this is what came:⁣

𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱, 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝗱. 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀.⁣

⁣

That changes the equation.⁣

⁣

Because courage doesn’t have to mean becoming harder.⁣

⁣

It doesn’t mean caring less.⁣

⁣

It doesn’t mean loving people less deeply so they can’t hurt you.⁣

⁣

For me, 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱…. instead of making the “right” choices while quietly hoping someone else’s response will prove that I am.⁣

⁣

And this is exactly the kind of work we’re beginning to explore inside 𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗗𝗢𝗠 𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗘 & 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬.⁣

Not simply reading Scripture.⁣

⁣

But slowing down long enough to notice the beliefs underneath our choices…⁣

⁣

bringing those beliefs before Holy Spirit…⁣

⁣

and allowing His truth to become the place we live and build from.⁣

⁣

𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙄 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙬𝙤?⁣
