WHY ORIGINAL FRAGRANCE HOUSES DON’T TALK ABOUT CLONES AND WHY THAT MATTERS
Yesterday, we talked about fragrance influencers, clone houses, and how comparing inexpensive fragrances to expensive originals has become a very effective marketing strategy. Today, I want to look at this from the other side. Have you ever noticed how rarely established designer, niche, and artisan fragrance houses publicly talk about clones of their own creations? Think about it. How often do you see Creed, Amouage, Xerjoff, or an independent artisan perfumer making videos comparing their work to inexpensive imitations? Not very often. And I believe there are some pretty good reasons for that. 1. WHY GIVE SOMEONE ELSE FREE ADVERTISING? Let’s start with the obvious. Imagine spending years developing a fragrance house, building your reputation, creating original compositions, and establishing your own identity. Then another company comes along and releases something designed to smell remarkably similar to one of your fragrances. Why would you turn around and advertise their product? Even criticizing that imitation brings attention to it. Suddenly, people who never knew the clone existed are searching for it. Sometimes the smartest thing a fragrance house can do is simply not acknowledge the imitation. 2. THERE’S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INSPIRATION AND IMITATION This is something I believe deserves more discussion. Many independent and artisan perfumers are trying to create something that represents their own artistic vision. Maybe it’s an unusual floral composition, a different interpretation of patchouli, an interesting combination of woods and resins, or an accord that doesn’t smell like anything currently on the market. They’re experimenting, taking risks, and developing their own recognizable style. Now, I’m certainly not suggesting every niche or designer fragrance is completely original. Perfumery has always involved inspiration, shared ingredients, established fragrance families, and evolving interpretations of earlier compositions. And I’m not suggesting every clone is poorly made. Some are actually quite good.

Premiering Mugler - A*Men 10/26/2026
This is a beautiful gourmand, iconic, unique, exotic, and luxurious fragrance. A powerful but “subtle” blend of boosy sweetness, fresh spiciness, smoky, woody, and ambery accords that exudes refinement and elegance. Projection and longevity are above average, ideal for cooler weather, but perfectly fine for whole year round wearing. I love this! Website declared notes: Smoky, woody, coffee absolu abstract, lavender, patchouli, and bourbon vanilla.
