Talk, talk, talk-talk-talk! (re-up'd)
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya’! Lemme ask y’all something… is “FragTalk” helping the hobby, or is it slowly turning the whole thing into a loud, overhyped circus where everybody’s chasing the same five buzzwords? Beast mode. Compliment puller. Nuclear. Panty dropper. Blind buy worthy. Somewhere along the way, parts of this hobby started feeling less like appreciation and more like a fantasy football draft for fragrance addicts. So today, I’m throwin’ out a few hard truths that might ruffle a few atomizers! First up, the beast mode obsession is absolutely costing people money. Brands know good and well that if they slap “Extrait” or “Elixir” on a bottle, crank up the loud woods, musks and ambroxan, folks will line up like it’s the second coming of scent. And sure, performance matters… but since when did subtlety become a crime? Not every fragrance needs to last 19 hours, kick down the door and announce itself like a pro wrestler entering WrestleMania. Sometimes the beauty is in the nuance, not in choking out your coworkers by lunch! Then there’s the paper strip nonsense. Some folks smell the opening for thirty seconds at the mall and walk out with a full bottle like they just found their signature scent. Nah, brother, that’s not the fragrance, that’s the handshake. The drydown is the real conversation. If it hasn’t sat on your skin for a few hours, gone through the heat, settled into the base and shown you what it’s really about, then all you bought was the best behavior version of that scent. That’s fragrance speed dating, not a relationship!! And while we’re here, let’s be honest about something else: buying is not the hobby. Learning, smelling, comparing, wearing, experiencing and understanding fragrance… that’s the hobby. Constantly hitting “add to cart” every time TikTok starts foaming at the mouth over a new release? That’s just shopping with a fancy excuse. If you’ve got enough juice on your shelf to outlive your mortgage (guilty!!), it might be time to ask whether you love fragrance… or just love the rush of the next package hitting the porch!

Review and SOTD - Ralph’s Club New York
A 2025 EDP, supposedly inspired by NYC nightlife and energy. Overall it’s fresh, sweet, and smooth. It’s versatile and pleasing, easy to wear for office, dates, or casual. It leans modern designer with good mass appeal. The scent profile includes top notes of blackcurrant, mandarin, and bergamot which gives it a fruity opening. In the heart is lavender, sandalwood, and geranium. The base brings bourbon vanilla, fir, and oakmoss that gives it a creamy, warm, slightly sweet drydown. It is similar to MYSLF L’Absolu or Montblanc Legend Elixir. Performance is good. Longevity is solid at 8+ hours and has moderate projection, but high on initial spray. Presentation is great, the bottle is a sleek chrome flask style. It’s also wife approved. A safe buy or safe sample if you’re looking for a versatile, modern daily wearer. Worth trying in store for sure

ATH Gin Sling - First Impressions
Got my hands on a bottle of Aaron Terrence Hughes’ new release Gin Sling today and am giving it a test wear. It literally just got listed on Fragrantica and I think I’m the very first person to rate it (beyond the one vote for “I have it” which I made, at the time I’m writing this no one else had it listed as “I have it” or “I want it“). First impressions are positive - 4 sprays to the arm and it’s very softly projecting, the open is a tart but lightly sweet lime with a hint of bitter tanginess and effervescence that’s vaguely reminiscent of tonic water. I don’t really get a lot of gin or even anything juniper-berry like. It’s very well blended and seems mass appealing for sure. There’s something in here that is reminiscent of other ATH‘s (this actually reminds me a bit of last year’s special release Electric Fever, swapping out the aromatics for this tangy effervescent lime) so it’s unmistakably his. I was worried that this would be redundant vs my beloved GNTonic, but thankfully that’s not the case as they are actually pretty different. Frankly, I prefer GNTonic - that one to me is pretty groundbreaking and unique, and really captures the essence of a gin and tonic, whereas this one doesn’t seem very revolutionary to me. That said, it is easy and pleasant to wear. Not really sure what the longevity is like – we’ll see how the four test sprays on my arm do. I did try two sprays to the hand earlier today and after 4 1/2 hours it was barely a skin scent, so hopefully with more sprays this will last longer than that.
