What do you need in a fragrance tracking app or site?
So, first bad news big layoff at my company so I'll have several months for job hunting and some free time too. second, this is a long post, but I'd appreciate feedback or input.
Tldr: what is missing in a fragrance tracking site or application you use today that you wish it had?
I started thinking about designing my own fragrance tracker (since entering things on an excel spreadsheet on mobile isn't great and I had tried Aromoshelf [not too bad but a little clunky, tabs, all manual entry to add a collection]) and started with these parameters. I was really thinking RMRS needs an app partner as a possible long term solution.
I have some second iteration items I already confirmed from these parameters but you can see the direction I'm going. Also, to protect my IP there are things I've left out here. I have a name picked out and logo, so it is possible I copyright or patent, depending. This is about developing additional AI skills sets and being on the side of building an app (I've been on the other side of writing requirements, testing, application strategy, etc).
create a fragrance tracking application which can be forked into IOS and Android.
Key features:
1) Model the interface similar to oeni.app where a user can take a photo to identify a fragrance.
2) Use internet resources such as fragella, fragrantica, parfumo, maxaroma and the fragrance brand's website to complete key characterisic information for each fragrance.
2A) When there is not a consensus default to the brand page when available.
3) Then update each fragrance using the fields in the attached file to support the characteristics of each fragrance.
4) Allow the interface to manually add a fragrance name and brand by typing the information or using a framed photo of the fragrance lable and bottle for the application to search the recommended internet resources.
5) Include additional categories for projection, sillage, with an adjustable rating scale for each
6) Add a duration scale in hours and auto complete that information from the internet resources and allow the user to update manually.
7) When a user updates any data manually, do not overwrite that information on each fragrance from internet sources.
8) When a user wants to update a specific fragrance to original internet resource data provide the user an option to cancel or proceed. Log on the interface whether the characteristics have been manually updated by using an indicator like an "M" or "User Updated" whichever is clearer and does not take up space on on the UI.
9) Consider placement of any buttons or fields the user might need to edit so that the controls do not overlap the devices real estate. For example, placing a cancel or save button near the very top left or right side of the UI since the device may have information native to the device displaying in the same area.
10) Enable the user to track each fragrance including the date, allow multiple fragrances to be tracked on a date, keep a count of the number of times each fragrance is worn, the date of last wear and provide a ranking of the number of wears relative to all of the fragrances tracked by the user.
11) Enable upload or download of the key characteristics so that the user can provide many fragrances into the application, or to download their information for desktop use.
12) Allow the user to create categories to organize fragrances contained in the application they provided. For example Owned, To Test, Wishlist might be common but also enable the user to create and save a custom category.
13) Allow the user to track other fragrances they do not own (they did not upload by file or use the photo method to add to the tracking.
14) Allow the user to filter by characteristics both a single characteristic as well as an option to add multiple characteristics. For example, the user wants to organize by Season and Olfactory Family.
15) Provide a desktop version where this app can be tested using mobile emulators to help refine the UI and funtionality.
16) Conduct initial testing of button functionality, sorting capabilities, removal of records, upload, photo recognition.
17) Consider ways to make the application lightweight and so that the user's data remains with the user and does not expose their data to others unless the user wants to share a specific fragrance or group of fragrances to another user.
18) Consider methods to allow users to share this information from item 17, within app, air drop, a special link. Again consider each user's security so that there is no exposure to other information from the other's device.
20) Consider methods to share a fragrance and specific characteristics on social media, for example "X", Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, Reddit for a user to share using their accounts on each platform.
