SOTD: Parfums de Marly Layton

For all of you PDM connoisseurs, I have a question: Here are the notes listed on Fragrantica for Layton: Top notes are Apple, Lavender, Bergamot and Mandarin Orange; middle notes are Geranium, Violet and Jasmine; base notes are Vanilla, Cardamom, Sandalwood, Pepper, Guaiac Wood, Patchouli, Coumarin and Ambermax™.

But right from the start I notice the base notes of vanilla and sandalwood. Is that normal? I was under the impression that top notes are the ones you get from first spray and it's only after the dry-down that we would get the base notes. Has anyone else experienced this, or is my nose just broken today?
