Ok. To be fair, Lunar New Year is his number one but it’s a given so I’m going to say that Qingming is a very close second. February 2017, he proposed to me (with no ring 😂 but we will save the story for another day). We knew that he also had to "pass" my parents' test because at that point, we only knew each other for 1 year. April 2017, during the Qingming Festival long weekend, he sat down with my parents and some elders in my family to formally "propose" to my parents. He spoke Chinese, prepared notes and wore a nice shirt. It was a big deal! On the same long weekend, he visited my grandparents' graves and my uncle's, going through the rituals of praying, preparing offerings and even "speaking" to them. He saw the big tents outside of 靈骨塔, tables full of food and air filled with burning incense. It was crowded, smokey and noisy but there seemed to be an order. He was amazed. He felt a spiritual connection when I "showed" him to my late uncle. This uncle was a special person in my life and I always said that I wish my uncle could have met him. And on that long weekend, he did. It was a deeply emotional and intimate experience for the all of us. My husband and his father always had the habit of visiting grandparents' graves. Not all the time, but often, compared to average American families. They would light a candle, clean the graves and talk about memories of them. So it is safe to say that the concept of 掃墓節 is not strange to my husband. You may be surprised to learn this but Italians and Greeks (and Hispanic) have quite strong family values. They stay close. It is also common to see grandparents taking care of grandkids, even in multi-generational homes(多代同堂). Doesn't it sound similar to Taiwan families? ▀

何謂 hot take?
常聽到的 What’s your take? 或 What is your take on XYZ? 加以延伸的一個用法就是 hot take: It refers to an “unpopular opinion”, or a viewpoint that you personally think others may disagree, or it may offend someone. You may want to use the term when testing the water in a conversation 影片前段逐字稿 ⬇️ -What is the main difference between Chinese and Japanese?(中國和日本的主要差別在哪裡 -People?(你指人嗎?) -Let’s say people. -This might be a little bit of a hot take. But umm, I think Japanese people are extremely polite, but not friendly. And Chinese people, they are extremely friendly, but sometimes not polite. 原影片 @kaja_kyoto 🧠 Food for thought 延伸思考 - 學習 take & hot take 的用法 - 探討 friendly vs. polite 之間的細微差別 想了想,你覺得影片有道理嗎?

(1) :Camera ➽ National Geographic ➽ books exhibition ➽ Thailand ➽ moon shrimp cake ✏️ "I go from camera to National Geographic because they have the 國家地理女性經典影像展 in Taipei. And National Geographic reminds me of books exhibition. Cuz they attended to the Books exhibition this year. There’s the theme of Thailand 泰國主題館 in Books exhibition on January . Thailand leads me to moon shrimp cake." (2) :Snowflake ➽ Let it go ➽ Kpop demon hunters ➽ Oscar ➽ Thong ✏️ "When I think of snowflake, it brings me to Let it go the movie. Then Kpop demon hunters came up, cuz both of them are great musical animation. The song “Golden” from Kpop demon hunters wins Oscars for the best original song. Robert Downey Jr. and Channing Tatum did a bit over a silver thong, that’s why it ends up w thong." - 我們可以從中而學的句型: - go from A to B - A reminds someone of B - A leads me to B - When I think of A, it brings me to B. - Something comes up - I end up with something. Erin did a fantastic job. You can do it too!

Curiosity is a love language
Personally, I couldn't agree more. 全篇文章 ⬇️ I was in a relationship for 6 years and he loved me in all the ways you could see. We went on dates, we bought each other gifts, we talked every single day. For a long time, I thought that was all you needed, but what was missing was the depth. He just wasn’t really curious about me. And it sounds silly but he as really into planes so I’d always ask him about them. Every time he picked up a new hobby, I’d ask him what drew him to it but I didn’t realize how much I needed that back until I made a bid for connection. A while ago, my dad and I went to Boston to see this artist I admire. When I came back, I was excited to tell mu boyfriend about it and he said, “oh cool, when you gonna be back?” That was it. It was always like that and I remember thinking “maybe this is something we can work on”. So I’d make more bids for connection, but he never changed. Then one day, around 6 months after we broke up, and I became friends with this girl and one day we were just hanging out. I casually mentioned that I liked this artist, and then she caught me off guard with “what is that you actually like about these paintings?” And I was surprised and said “Oh well it’s the strategy. Impressionism is harder than realism because realism is just copying.” She thought for a second and then she just said, “why do you think that?” And I just froze. It was such a simple question and we barely knew each other then. But I felt oddly seen and heard in that moment because it wasn’t just “oh she wanted to know more about art”. It was that this girl I barely knew was still curious to know more about who I really was and in that moment, I felt more sense than I felt in my past 6 years of relationship I was in. Because talking, dates, and gifts are all rituals of love but being curious was the actual intimacy and making someone feel seen requires a level of genuine interest in who they are. Because love is more than just rituals. It’s remembering that the person in front of you is deeper than the version you already know. And being curious enough to keep discovering because if I love you, I just want to know who you are.
