Technically in English, it’s an exempt position - meaning that the job is exempt or excluded from overtime pay, getting a fixed salary no matter the hours. However, I like to call 責任制 a work culture rather than a policy in Taiwan. It’s unwritten, unspoken yet expected. In Taiwan, it manifests itself as desk warming, as working overtime without pay, as accepting unreasonable hours. While holding someone accountable is one thing, it’s another thing to have a society that is ruled by it. People who abide by the “exempt culture”, will do more to look good, to carry the team and to avoid liability.
