Random coeliac disease facts
Hey everyone, Thought I'd jump on here & start a thread because I've been doing a bit of research over the past week & I've learned some random & useful things about CD. For example, I discovered that laxatives are ineffective for us, and that we're at higher risk of miscarriages if we get glutened. So I thought maybe we could share some different facts we've found out about the way our bodies work with this condition & help educate each other 😊

I shared this in another thread but I discovered I have different reactions to different gluten proteins. When doing a gluten challenge I found I have much more mild symptoms to wheat (Gliadin) which is probably why it took me to long to realize I have celiac, although barley (Hordien) I react really bad to and get awful migraines, and debilitating stomach pain.
Neurodiversity and Coeliac!
Are there any fellow neurospicys? AuDHD, ADHD or ASD? Do you find they impact your ability to cope/function with coeliac? x

I have AuDHD and it’s honestly impacted me so much, I get horrible anxiety around eating out and hate having to ask for accommodations at restaurants so I cook 95% of the food I eat at home. Although I live in a shared household where my family isn’t very considerate about my celiac and I get extremely overwhelmed having to spend 2+ hours whipping everything down because there’s crumbs EVERYWHERE. I had a melt down 2 weeks ago because my dad made homemade pizza and there was flour covered every square inch of the kitchen.

@Carissa Hanson I love meal prepping!! I do it once a week (I tried to do it every two weeks but would get sick of eating the same food too fast, and if something was in the fridge for too long I’d get grossed out and I’d be convinced it was moldy even if it was fine) the cleaning every week sucks but it helps me through the week so much especially because I work out of and work in trades so after being out of the house from 5am to 5pm the last thing I want to do it cook.
Different Reactions to Different Grains?
Does anyone else get different reactions?? Oddly enough my reaction have always been very mild with wheat, a very minor stomach ache, constipation, and fatigue. Barely is a whole other story, I react awful to barely. I get debilitating stomach pain, nausea, migraines, etc. I haven’t payed attention to any other grains and don’t feel like testing it out lol, but I’ve noticed I get especially bad reactions to barley.

@Carissa Hanson I had my endoscopy 7 months after my blood test, I didn’t even realize I had a reaction to gluten because I was eating wheat everyday! I used to eat pasta at least once a day, I was so used to the stomach pain I thought it was normal, and thought the fatigue I blamed on my low iron. It wasn’t until I ate a big helping of barely stew and had one of the worst reactions I’ve ever experienced. I then connected why I always felt sick after eating risotto lol
GF Pierogi!
Anyone have those favourite foods/recipes they're nervous to try after diagnosis because it'd be heartbreaking if the GF version doesn't feel/taste the same? Pierogis were one of mine- I put it off for some time and finally attempted last week. I was so relieved they felt and tasted the same and that I could still fold them nicely! Here's the recipe :) https://glutenfreeonashoestring.com/gluten-free-potato-pierogi/

I’ve been dying to have pierogies, they were my biggest comfort food before, any death, break up, bad grade etc pierogies would make me feel better throughout any hard times, so I will definitely be trying these!!
Cocktails 🍸
I used to have these a lot on a night out and always checked the ingredients carefully. However, I've realised the huge risk of cross-contamination (through shaker/mixer) Particularly recently wheat-based additions seem to be being added to other cocktails. Just writing to understand other's experiences and whether when you asked they could accomodate you?

I always avoid ording anything in a shaker at bars and stick with rum and Coke, or coolers, but I went to Starbucks recently and they were really nice about cleaning the steamers and milk pitchers to avoid cross contamination from anything made with oat milk!
