Announcement for The Hernia Community
Hi everyone, I've decided that I will be shutting the Skool Hernia Community down but simply moving it over to a Facebook group. I'll provide the link to the Facebook Group soon. I have a return to exercise / working out program on here that I will be putting out to everyone for free and will be available on YouTube. That link will be provided soon too. Thank you everyone that has been part of this community. πŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ

Pain after some exercises (post-op 4 months)
I had RIH repaired at Shouldice in January 2025. Around the 3 month mark I started to resume swimming - to get ready for my return to scuba diving. I'm a bit frustrated in the past month that after doing laps and/or flutterboard I have some pains at the surgical site. So then I try to take it easy for a few days till the ache/pain goes away, then swim again and same thing happens. Do I just need to rest longer? Am I negatively affecting the repair by (apparently) stressing it by swimming? I am going on a scuba trip around the 5.5 month mark (July 2025) where I'll be doing multiple dives a day... so I'm a little concerned that I'll be sore after just one dive. I was initially concerned about lifting the scuba tanks and such, but swimming is kind more important. How does one build core strength when doing so results in pain? :(

At this point I don't think you are negatively affecting the area. The area needs to be strengthened more. Give some of these a try. HOW TO STRENGTHEN and REHAB your ABS and CORE after HERNIA SURGERY. https://youtu.be/pu72CnUFsc8 You may want to shorten your swims a the moment to find the amount of time that it takes while you swim that causes you soreness. Take it back until you find the point where you are just sore for no more than a day. You may want to try doing different swim days where a day may be shorter but a faster pace and some days a slower pace but longer swim.

@Michael Mansell scar tissue can do that as well. If it is, it is something to work through but I think it's safer to go slow and steady with slow gradual progression. I personally like to track my workouts so I can see the gradual progression and write any notes to look back to see any progress or patterns that may be causing the pain. Let me know things progress.
Exercises
After 21 days, did you go through the exercises again? Or just do day 21 over and over? Where did you go from there?

You can repeat the last day or even last few days over and over if you'd like. However at that point you should be able to return to your usual sports and exercises like normal.

@Bj Riley I would definitely recommend trying them but on the really easy side ie. Wall pushups to start and incrementally make it more difficult with incline pushups, modified pushups and eventually full pushups. Be very mindful of your breathing and technique.
Back pain after surgery?
Hello guys I have developed some back pain after my surgery, I started like three days from the surgery and decrease after some days when my core started to feel better how ever in a recent trip, pain in the groin was very small and I walked and stand a lot almost the whole day at second day back pain returns and increases every day until I stopped walked and standing that much Know two days after my trip the back pain is better but I need to alternate positions (walking , seated) to avoid pain, being totally standing could. Increase the pain I’m going to see an specialist for the back pain, my hernia surgeon says is probably a muscular contraction and must go with some local heat but I’m not to sure about it Has anyone experience something similar ?

How is your back pain during? Often when we are injured or healing, we change our posture to feel more comfortable which can lead to other issues - like back pain.

@Cris Castro I'm sorry to hear this Cris! I would try to be very mindful when doing any exercises or even you usual movements in your daily life of how you are executing it all. For example, without focusing on it, you may not even realize you sit with your pelvis shifted to one side or have a slight limp. These substlr nuances can cause changes in our structure that can cause us discomfort or issues over time.

I'm not personally aware of it but know that's it's a relatively newer method and I have been spoken to a few people that had success with it.
