Pain after some exercises (post-op 4 months)
I had RIH repaired at Shouldice in January 2025. Around the 3 month mark I started to resume swimming - to get ready for my return to scuba diving. I'm a bit frustrated in the past month that after doing laps and/or flutterboard I have some pains at the surgical site. So then I try to take it easy for a few days till the ache/pain goes away, then swim again and same thing happens. Do I just need to rest longer? Am I negatively affecting the repair by (apparently) stressing it by swimming? I am going on a scuba trip around the 5.5 month mark (July 2025) where I'll be doing multiple dives a day... so I'm a little concerned that I'll be sore after just one dive. I was initially concerned about lifting the scuba tanks and such, but swimming is kind more important. How does one build core strength when doing so results in pain? :(

Thanks Jayce, appreciate the feedback. I have watched that video before and incorporated stomach vacuums and planks into my workouts a while back (and I do vacuums when I'm just standing around now too, lol). I have actually been doing more exercise post-op (4-5 days a week) than I was in my life before all of this (1-2 days a week, if that).... the 21-day routine helped form a habit :). I had someone recently give me their 'opinion' that my pain could be from scar tissue... and that I might need to 'work through the pain' to help break up the scar tissue - but that person had different surgery on different part of the body, so I don't know if what they said applies to hernia repairs. Shouldice had us exercising from day 1, so it's not like I've been sitting around. Anyway, I'll try scaling back the swimming, but it's only been a few days a week and not really that far (compared to what I used to do). I read that in hernia sx recovery you shouldn't be kicking really hard, so I may also cut out the flutterboard and just do laps. I've watched your other 6 month and 1 year videos, so I've seen that you still had some pain when you overdid your workouts - but I'm not pumping iron like you are! 😆

Thanks @Tim Dean , that helpful to hear. I am going to ease off on the swim laps for a bit and go back to core exercises I think. I did my first scuba dive since surgery on the weekend and was surprised that I did not have the same issues... but I realized underwater you're neutrally bouyant (as a scuba diver at least) and it doesn't take the same amount of energy to move around as it does swimming on the surface. All very chill and slow movements underwater... I was quite happy when finished! Mind you, I have to be careful lumbering around with the equipment on land - an extra 40-50 lbs on my back! Anyway, thanks again for the note.
Sleeping tips
Hello I wanted to post some tips that helped me sleep better in early recovery days and wanted to hear some coming from the community In my case (left inguinal laparoscopic) was very hard to sleep on side so I started to sleep on back position so here some recommendations - use a towel or a firm enough pillow in your lumbar zone to reduce back pain as a support - Use a pillow below your knees also helps for back posture and I heard for blood flow into your legs - Sleeping mask in my case help me a lot because my curtains aren’t blackout - Keep basic things closer but distractors, in this case keep my medication closer and some water help me to didn’t get out of bed and return to sleep easier Hope this helps some of you and wanted to hear yours also folks.

One thing that helped me a lot once I got home was wearing this one pair of boxers I had that were kind of a silky material... they let me slide my butt in bed and really made turning a lot easier. I wish I had them with me at the hospital!
Hello (and post-op pain?)
Hello to the group. I recently had an inguinal hernia fixed at Shouldice. Today is post-op day 13. As others have probably experienced, the incision site/area is somewhat numb for a while after surgery... my numbness has just started to go away (around post-op day 11). Is it possible that as sensations return, some pain will also re-appear? I've been doing really good recovering - incision looks good and is not painful, but I'm having some other 'internal' pains. I'm guessing this is where the hernia was actually fixed internally(?). I've had a few rather sharp pains while stretching in bed, in an area that is like 2" below the bottom of my incision and right in the crease of my groin... I wouldn't have thought the surgeon would be working that far from the incision, so all I can guess is that it's some kind of residual nerve pain. There is no bruising that far down and there is no swelling - but when the pain stabs me there it throbs for a while. Anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure whether to "wait for it to go away" or to contact Shouldice. I really just want to ask them if this is normal... there is nothing to 'see' at an in-person appointment - like I said, the incision site looks fine. (anyone know if they do phone appointments?)

Update, 28(ish) days post-op - Shouldice RIH repair: Healing well, the spontaneous nerve pains have subsided, and I just finished Jayce's 21-day exercises! Cobra pose is probably the only move left where I'm very aware of my incision. My incision is now a red line and the area is still firm but I understand it softens with time.

I had similar experience after week 2 -- was feeling good at that point, although still numb in areas - then week 3 when numbness started to go away I experienced some pain. And not incisional pain, but pain in the area where the repair was done in the canal. I had tingling sensations and sometimes shooting pains in that side of my groin and inside of leg for a few days too, but it subsided. The "ilioinguinal nerve" goes through that area and they have to work around it... nerves can take a bit longer to heal and recover from disruptions like this.
Attraction parks after hernia surgery
Hello everyone I got my hernia surgery recently , I have planned a trip to WDW Orlando next week so I’ll be with 14 days of recovery, previous to my surgery doctor says I’ll could handle some attractions (chest supported) but I wanted to know if some of you have experience problems around with the rides after hernia surgery early recovery stages Btw I have an appointment with my doctor next week before my trip so I’ll update with new info also.

I don't have experience on amusement park rides after surgery, but I can say that my wife recovered quicker from her laproscopic surgery (gall bladder) than I did with a 3-4" incision (Shouldice method, right inguinal).
