Return of the Dancing Dragon Circus
Hey everyone, it's been a while since I posted about running the Pine Hollow One-Shot. Figured I'd report back on how it went (Spoilers: it's so good they're insisting this turn into a full campaign) When the reminisce of the Dancing Dragon Circus rolled into Pine Hollow hoping to stumble up on the treasure, the last thing they expected was the turf war between local factions. After herassing the BMTC, the group rescued one of the Town Council members from abduction. One of the players had previous relations with this council member (a retired circus acrobat) and through that they got the job to scoop up the treasure before the other factions could. Delving into the mines, they tried (and failed) to sneak past Those Left Behind and were forced to put them down. They found the treasure and were ambushed by both leaders of the Chosen and BMTC. They were able to side with the Chosen for long enough to defeat the BMTC, but made too tempting of a target and the cultists turned on the circus troupe. After many rogue sneak attacks, fighter's archer shots, and a few Nat 20 death saving throws, the group was able to squeak out a victory. Now with a Bag of Holding loaded with gold, the circus troupe are getting ready to put on their biggest show ever. (If you want more details let me know)

@Danel Vladimir the funny thing is how my players were the ones that came up with the circus stuff. I'm kinda lost on how to make this work, but I trust my players will add to the creative process
Factions and Goals for a Circus Campaign
Ok, I've gotten through the One-Shot material and need to prep for the more homebrew stuff. They'll be at Level 5 when we get back into it. Party Composition: Rith- (Drow Bard of Creation) New Ringmaster with a romantic side quest BluSkal- (Kobold Soulknife Rogue) When not doing "crowd-work", this pickpocket is looking for rumors about his draconic lineage (which he has found) Krishna- (Dragonborn Champion Fighter-Archer) The main attraction of the Dancing Dragon Circus, this acrobat is planning to reconcile running away from home Zephyr- (Half-elf Circle of Stars Druid) Special effects expert for the troupe. He joined the circus to travel in search of a now discovered artifact. State of the Game: The major antagonists and their lieutenants of the Pine Hollow Campaign were all killed. They have a hefty sack of gold and some completed mid term goals. Current Goals (as far as I can tell): - Put on a show for Pine Hollow - Return to each of their home towns and put on shows there as well I guess my problem is I'm not sure where to go next since some are more involved in goal setting than others. I'm in touch with them separately, but since we're playing over Discord it makes group planning a bit tricky. In the back of my head, I think I need to theme the campaign around a concept like freedom or frivolity. Perhaps a faction looking to break the spirits of the people and keep them submissive? Perhaps we make it a game where they try to accumulate Fame Points? I CALL UPON THE WISDOM OF THE MASTER COUNCIL!
Just got here!
Hello all - I just heard about this group about an hour ago and I joined right away. I play DnD 5e 2014. I learned from my kids in 2018 and jumped straight in. I've done a reasonable amount of in-person play and DMing, but the pandemic pushed us online where I've played via video group chat on Roll20 - until I discovered playing via text only, which I find is the most immersive experience I've found in DnD. (Happy to share my experience with that if anyone is interested.) Right now I'm in the final act of my homebrew (text) campaign which has been going for almost 4 years. I'm also running a live game to introduce seniors to DnD at the local library using the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle pack. Current interests are running huge battles (because wrapping up my campaign), philosophy of/aproaches to TTRPGs by designers and GMs, running more exciting games generally. Looking forward to being here and meeting folks! - Doug

Hi Doug, I did some text campaigns for a few years too! We used to do in person until all my players started moving with odd schedules. It's definitely a good medium for group that love the novel-narrative experience. Did it feel like you had more time to get the words and actions just right? How did you handle combat encounters?
How'd Your Campaign End?
Hey folks, I'm about two or three sessions away from wrapping up a massive two year (!) campaign! I'm super excited to see where it'll all go, and to see all my players wrap up their character arcs, explore one last crazy dungeon, and have a giant boss fight to resolve those big old long term goals. Since my table enjoys longer campaigns, we don't have big endings like this often! As my hype grows, I'd love to hear some stories about cool conclusions to campaigns, whether long or short form. What cool stuff did you throw at your players, and what cool stuff did they do? For this one, my group is going through an extraplanar dimension to race a bunch of demigods to the origin of time and remake the world in their image---giants, dragons, elementals, archmages, all sorts of big foes they've made and allies they're bringing along in a weird mind-bendy dungeon! We're a little ways in already and things are looking very cool, I'll make a post or two about how it wraps up and what I learned. How about you?

One of my friends let me play as a player for a once and we tried out the Spelljammer adventure book that came out a couple years ago. I made a Path of the Totem Warrior barabian that went on these zanny space hijinx, collect shiny souvenirs, and solved delicate problems the "fast" way :). One of his goals (before I'd even read this book) was to die gloriously to gain a wonderous place in the afterworld. By the end of the adventure, we'd failed enough skill checks that someone would have to stay behind to "set off the nuke". He volunteered to stay behind and activate the bomb to let his friends get away and save the planet. He stood there, taking in the light of the star about to supernova and holding the powerful artifact he'd use to start the chainreaction, and said, "Heh, one last souvenir." To this day, in my head canon, that barbarian is living it up in Forgetten Realms equivalent of Valhala and rocking halls with his stories!

@Tristan Fishel End of campaign, our bard moved to Seattle after that so we started video calling for games after that
Pre-game Rituals
I've go a couple hours before my Session Zero with my players, and it made me think. What are some of the things you do to prepare for a session? Music? Review your notes? Stare into the void for more inspriation?!
