Irish Independent newspaper article.
Hello there, A professor of sport and exercise science was doing a podcast on over 50s fitness and I was listening in. All was sounding really good until the host asked him how much exercise per week the older person would need to do just for overall general health. I think he said something like 2x per week resistance training at least 30 minutes long and 3x per week moderate intensity cardio at least 30 minutes each session. I emailed in with a polite correction and It caught the eye of a journalist. She got in touch and wrote this piece for the paper.

What makes for a great trainer?๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ
This morning as I was doing my workout, I began to reflect on some of the things that make for a good trainer. Monday is my day to do my workout, catch up on paper work, do my piano, get my nails done (all the important things, right? Ha!). ๐Ÿ˜‚ I began to think about what makes for a good trainer and Development of the Self, is what came to mind. If I want consistency from my clients, then I myself must be consistent. Showing up for myself, keeping myself accountable to the same workout I put my clients through, sets a tone. Clients know when they come to gym, I mean business. Sure we talk, but in between the talking, we work. We get what we put out. If we want clients who value and appreciate us, then we must put forth energy that values and appreciates the client. Clients can tell when we are tired or half a&*ing it. When we show up with an energy ready to serve our customer, we in turn see that reflected back to us through client retention or through continued referrals from our clients. If I am not at my best, I am not going to be able to offer the best of myself to my clients. Every morning before I head to the gym, I take time to mentally prepare and adapt accordingly to the days events. Clients arenโ€™t paying only for our expertise, they are paying for our presence and sometimes our presence becomes the most important thing we have to offer. There has been so many days over the years, where the workout became irrelevant, not because it didnโ€™t matter, but what mattered was my ability as a trainer to be present and adapt the workout accordingly. Who we are attracts what we get. The beliefs we hold, the energy we radiate, the way we see ourselves, is what shapes the experiences and people that come into our life. Clients come to me easily and effortlessly because I hold an image in my mind that I am โ€˜always ready and open for businessโ€™ and I deliver on that belief each and everyday. The โ€œIโ€ I see myself โ€œto beโ€ attracts the business I want to have and the clients I want to train.๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

Great post! I truly believe that miracles happen when we are present and in our life versus in our head. Thank you for sharing this!!

NEW MINI-SERIES alert: Inspired by the original โ€œGarage HIT Studioโ€ episode, Pete and Lawrence are digging deeper and walking you through every aspect of actually building out a garage-based HIT studio, from start to finish. Here in episode 1, they talk about the first steps you need to take: โ€œHow would I know if my area is good for starting a HIT business?โ€ โ€œWhat about zoning and permits? What about building in internal spaces and what client amenities should I think about?โ€ and more things you should factor in at the outsetย โ€”ย check it out here

Almost through watching this. Here is a question I thought of. If I were to want to start my own garage HIT business sometime in the future. Are there any certifications that are recommended to have before starting that adventure?

@Lawrence Neal thanks Lawrence! Iโ€™ve checked out the site previously but Iโ€™ll take another look! I was also mainly looking at it through the lens of credibility with potential clients.

I would like to get a group together for a zoom call to discuss this workout. I've been fascinated with this workout story and would like to know if anyone else has tried it or a variation of it. I tried a negative only variation that was interesting. Here's a link to the video https://youtu.be/txVFOvzTB5c?si=YgbTkyT8q6gG5cWj

I had just watched a similar video and wondered the same. I train alone in a garage gym with free weights so Iโ€™ve never tried to experiment with them.
