Random coeliac disease facts
Hey everyone, Thought I'd jump on here & start a thread because I've been doing a bit of research over the past week & I've learned some random & useful things about CD. For example, I discovered that laxatives are ineffective for us, and that we're at higher risk of miscarriages if we get glutened. So I thought maybe we could share some different facts we've found out about the way our bodies work with this condition & help educate each other 😊

I have been told that wooden utensils (in particular wooden spoons) previously used with gluten can absorb gluten and never fully be clean so silicone spoons for cooking and plastic chopping boards are best.
Adenomyosis and coeliac disease
Good evening all, Happy Friday! Bit of a weird thing happened today, would be interested to hear your insight please? In the last couple of years I have been diagnosed with coeliac disease and adenomyosis (similar to endometriosis). As a result, I have gained some weight but also suffer with bloating some of the time. A male colleague spoke to me today after his female colleague had asked him if I was pregnant. The way he worded it was quite… blunt, and upsetting but he didn’t mean to cause offence (it really did though!!). Firstly, does anyone else also have adeno? Secondly, what’s everyone’s top tips for not being bloated? I don’t know whether to say something to the female colleague regarding ā€˜women supporting women’ or explain that my medical conditions cause the bloating. Or even to add that due to the adeno, I may struggle to conceive, so whichever way you look at it, his and her comments were super hurtful. It’s made me cry a couple of times since, and I just feel… glum šŸ˜” Why are people so mean?! Sorry for the long post… xx

You just don’t ask that question, to anyone. I also think it very insensitive to ask people when they’re going to have children. It can be so triggering. But some people don’t think before they speak and their words can hurt a lot. If you feel more comfortable explaining to them about your medical conditions then go for it. It might make them both see how damaging their comments can be and maybe make them think twice before saying something similar to someone else. Though you should never feel you have to explain to excuse the way you look. People should just butt out and mind their own business.
I gave in….
I have NEVER been so excited about something gluten free, like ever šŸ˜† I couldn’t resist any longer 🧔

I went in on launch day and talked myself out of buying one. Told myself I don’t need it but that I would have one when I have a girls night in a few weeks. That resolve lasted less than a week 🤣🤣
Living with with family who aren’t GF
Hey, me againšŸ˜… Anyone who lives with family who aren’t Coeliac/GF? How do you operate? What is separate? Do you share cutlery? Air fryer if using inserts? How do you go to other families houses/ visit friends and eat where you don’t have your GF sanctuary… pans, utensils, plates, trays etc? Last thing… Anyone with Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH)?😩

At home my husband eats what I eat except for cereal and bread. The toaster is his, I use the grill. He prepares his lunch for work and sprays everything down, rinses things and then puts straight in dish washer. We share everything that is not wooden providing it is clean. I always use foil in trays as an extra precaution. However I work as a nanny in a house where everyone eats gluten. I take all my own food including little pots of butter if I need it. They are a very clean and tidy family but I still take precautions such as not using the wood chopping board or utensils for my food. My Cuttlery goes straight on a clean plate. The children (2,5,7) are all amazing and always ask whether food contains gluten. I love that they will be so clued up on coeliac disease should they ever come across it again. I can safely eat at my parents and in laws. I visit my cousin once a week and she is super accommodating and learnt quickly how to prepare food safely. However I do feel very nervous eating at anyone else house. People try their best but sometimes it’s the little things that get overlooked that cause big problems. I would generally feel safe taking my own food or cooking with the host so I have some control. I’m not sure the worry ever leaves but you definitely get better at standing up for your needs. I’m about 9/10months in and won’t eat anything I don’t feel safe with even if it seems I causing a scene. Trust me the scene would be far worse if I was taken to a&e with a reaction. It’s a minefield! Always take your own food if you don’t feel 100% safe
