Today I’m wearing my Seiko Presage Cocktail Time GMT “Acacia.” This one has a little different place in the collection for me because it was a Christmas gift from my wife this past Christmas. and that automatically gives a watch a significance that has absolutely nothing to do with price, rarity, or prestige. One of the things I enjoy about collecting watches is that some pieces are acquired because of the history, some because of the movement, some because I spent years chasing them…and then there are watches that simply remind you of a person, a moment, or a chapter in your life. This is one of those. It also happens to be a really interesting watch. The Presage Cocktail Time collection takes its inspiration from Tokyo cocktail culture, and this particular GMT is known as the “Acacia.” The ivory dial has that beautiful radiating pattern that changes dramatically depending on the light, while the small gold-tone GMT hand allows the watch to track a second time zone. There are also little details I appreciate more the longer I look at it — especially the 24-hour numerals worked into the dial and the way the warm ivory, gold accents and brown leather strap all work together. It’s an elegant watch without being overly dressy. But ultimately, the reason I enjoy putting this one on is much simpler. My wife chose it for me. Long after I've forgotten what I wore with it on any particular Thursday, I'll still remember where this watch came from. And I think those are often the watches that eventually become the most important ones in a collection. 😎
