Art of the Deal
Although I recently shared this story on RMRS, I thought it needed visibility in this forum too! While visiting a local jeweler, my wife spotted a watch she absolutely loved. The sticker price was $395, but my inner WIS (Watch Idiot Savant) couldn’t resist doing a little reconnaissance first. Sure enough, I found the exact same watch online for $350. Armed with that bit of intelligence, I returned to the store and launched my opening salvo. “Is $395 your best price?” The sales associate didn’t even flinch. “Nope… I can do $340.” At that point I was already beating the online price, so I smiled and said, “Deal!” As we continued talking watches and swapping stories, a little rapport developed. While she was boxing up the watch, I casually asked, “Do you happen to offer a military discount?” “Yes, we do—and thank you for your service.” Just like that… another 10% vanished from the total. Final score: * MSRP: $395 * Negotiated price: $340 * Military discount: 10% * Final price: Just over $306 before tax. Not bad for a few minutes of friendly conversation. Watch collecting teaches patience, research, and timing. This time, all three paid off. Better yet, my wife walked away with a watch she genuinely loves, and I got the satisfaction of knowing the only thing sweeter than a new watch is getting one without paying full retail. I guess you could say this purchase was right on time

Gentlemen, here are a few standout posts from the Watch Lover community this week. 👏 Big shoutout to @Darren Poesel for "Rookie Mistake !" — the hilarious and all-too-relatable story of getting his wife hooked on mechanical watches, only for her to ask him if he saw anything he liked. Darren's tale of rapidly justifying a purchase is marriage and watch collecting in perfect, comedic harmony. Post: https://www.skool.com/watch-lover/rookie-mistake 👏 Shoutout to @Jeffrey Plotka for "My New Addition" — the story of a six-month search for an American-made watch that spoke to him, culminating in a proud new acquisition. It was 1 year ago today I finally decided to stop just watching RMRS videos and see what the Skool groups were all about. I am not a big social media guy. I do not keep Facebook, instagram or others on my phone, if I go in its through the browser only as I felt that the endless scrolling wasn't for me. I do watch YouTube quite a bit and while that is technically social media that is the only one that I regularly interact with. That being said if it weren't for YouTube and my interaction with videos on mens shoes, watches and clothing I never would have found @Antonio Centeno and the RMRS channel and all of you here on this platform. I try to be a very intentional person about everything I do, and that includes being thankful! While I have always enjoyed dressing well, polishing shoes, watches, fragrance etc, I really enjoy being around a group of supportive men looking to build each other up instead of putting them down to make themselves look better! This is what attracted me to this group and I am a MUCH better man for it! I truly cherish all of my interactions with you all. This is a rare group to be sure and, I would love to list all of the men here that have helped me along the way!! Wishing you all an Outstanding Tuesday or Wednesday depending on where in the world you are!! Thanks!!

Many thanks to @Brett Sutton for posting his outstanding blue Longines HydroConquest and sending me down yet another horological rabbit hole. At roughly $1,600 retail, I wasn't planning on adding one anytime soon, but Jomashop had other ideas, and after stacking a few discounts, I couldn't resist bringing this 41mm home for just under $900. Mine came on the stainless steel bracelet instead of the signature blue rubber strap, so naturally I enlisted AI to visualize a few alternatives. The results were so convincing that I've gone from deciding whether to buy a blue strap to debating which blue strap—or perhaps all of them. After all, every watch collector knows that the real cost of a watch is rarely the watch itself...it's the accessories that inevitably follow.
