Driving my land barge around today, needed something to help with navigation and longitude. Got this one out of the watch roll for something different.
Original Thomas Mercer marine chronometer.
Solid brass finished in dark mahogany and mineral glass with a silver brushed finish dial. Sub seconds at 6 o'clock and a power reserve at 12 for the massive 56 hour power reserve. Speaking of power this bad boy uses a 10cm long fusee chain to get the power out from the massive barrel to the spring detent escapement for that classical click clack of a 7200bph timepiece. The movement is regulated to perfection by an incredible platinum vertical spiral balance spring with gold balance wheel and weights. The movement is finished by all heat blued screws and springs as well as matching heat blued hands for the dial side.
Comes with a convenient geared key for winding
The watch is cased in a triple axis gyro surrounded by solid mahogany to keep it steady in rough seas and prevent any damage. Lug to lug is wide, like Flava Flav wide.
Not one I take out often but certainly gets looks when I take it to a local cafe, or pirate convention.
