I Bought a Real Watch and Didn't Feel Different. Here's What Actually Changed.
A few years ago, I finally saved up and bought a watch I'd been staring at online for months. Midnight blue dial. Steel bezel. That satisfying click when you wind it.
I unboxed it, strapped it on, and waited for the transformation.
Nothing.
I didn't feel more successful. Didn't suddenly command more respect. Didn't become the person I thought I'd be when I could afford it.
Here's what I realized watches don't change you. They just remind you of where you've been.
The watch I actually wear most now? A scratched-up Seiko my wife gave me when we were barely making rent. It's worth maybe $200. Means more to me than anything in my collection.
That's the thing about this hobby. It's not about the logo on the dial. It's about what you were doing when you put it on.
This week, let's keep it simple
Go dig out the watch you bought first. Or the one someone gave you. Or the one that's been sitting in a drawer for no good reason.
Wind it. Wear it for a day.
