Just because a toothpaste says natural, fluoride free, or whitening does NOT automatically mean it’s the best choice or healthy.
Here’s what we'd ideally be looking for in a toothpaste-
- Cleaner overall ingredients in general
- No SLS
- No artificial sweeteners
- No artificial dyes
- Gentle enough for daily use
- No heavy metals
- no fluoride
- caution on Titanium Dioxide
A clean label is not the whole story.
Some of the ingredients that make a toothpaste sound earthy, natural, or remineralizing may actually raise more questions in a heavy metal conversation.
That includes ingredients like -
- hydroxyapatite
- calcium carbonate
- bentonite clay
Why?
Because these ingredients come from mineral, rock, earth, or bone related sources that very often contain lead and other heavy metals. Look ro ask for 3rd party testing and verification.
So no, “natural” does not automatically mean cleaner.
And let’s talk about whitening for a second.
Most whitening toothpastes work by helping scrub away surface stains.
That usually means more abrasion.
So if you already have-
- sensitive teeth
- thinning enamel
- gum recession
- or you brush hard
…a whitening toothpaste may not be the best everyday choice.
My top picks from the chart I reviewed-
- Dr. Brown’s Baby Toothpaste - Strawberry
- Kids’ Spry Tooth Gel with Xylitol - Original
- Orajel Training Toothpaste - Berry Fruity
- Miessence Toothpaste - Mint
These were the strongest picks from the uploaded chart because they tested non detect for lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.
Can Adults use kids toothpaste? Yes.
Brands I’d be more cautious with-
- Hello - generally good except for the Watermelon flavor which tested high in heavy metals
- Boka
- Risewell
- Davids
- Weleda
- Essential Oxygen
The one I’d be most cautious with-
A good toothpaste is not just about what it leaves out.
It’s also about-
- what the raw materials may bring in
- how abrasive it is
- and whether it makes sense for daily use
Best bet - choose clean, simple, and gentle over flashy every time.
Please keep in mind that the above mentioned Brands may choose to change or improve their formulations at any time due to consumer pressure or buying patterns.
