SOTD - Interlude Black Iris by Amouage (1 of 3)

I hope everyone is doing great.

Today kicks off a three part testing of some Amouage fragrances I recently got decants of, two of them thanks to a great friend. Believe it or not, this is my very first experience with the house of Amouage, so I’m going in fresh with no expectations. I started by blindly grabbing one at random: Interlude Black Iris. Not knowing what I was getting into, I went with six sprays yeah, I went big without knowing and holy heck, fellas… if you know, you know. This opening is WILD.

Right away, I was hit with a bright citrus note paired with rosemary. At first sniff, I couldn’t quite place it until I glanced at the note breakdown, then it clicked. That opening doesn’t stick around too long though, as the fragrance quickly morphs into something resinous, slightly dirty, floral, and masculine but still bright. Bright like “shine bright like a diamond” bright. Rihanna would be proud.

The dry down is where things get even more interesting. The Orris comes forward, not waxy, but slightly powdery, blending beautifully with amber and resins. As it settles further, soft leather and woods start to appear, but the Orris remains the star of the show, almost as if it’s sitting gracefully on top a bed of leather. On skin, it feels dynamic and changing, while on clothes it comes across a bit differently.

Do I like this? Absolutely. Holy heck, YES. It’s super unique and unlike anything I’ve experienced before. Honestly, I probably should have started with Interlude Man, because this one may have ruined the lineup for me, it set the bar high.

Maybe it’s my lack of experience with fragrances of this caliber, but Interlude Black Iris feels like a rollercoaster ride, swinging between notes and keeping me engaged the whole time. It never goes flat, and I haven’t gone nose blind to it at all, it just keeps evolving. Make sense?

At times, I picked up a vibe similar to Gentleman Society (probably the Orris Root at work), and for a moment, it even gave me a whiff of Black Orchid.
