Shelf Control: The Build Begins...
Week 4: Building a solid support...
Hey guys, Joe A. here with another one for ya’! Welcome back to SHELF CONTROL, where one man attempts to bring order to a fragrance collection that clearly stopped respecting boundaries. This week, we are officially past the planning stage: the brackets are up. I now have wall brackets installed for four rows of shelving in the garage office, which means this project has moved from “good idea” to “there are now holes in my wall and no turning back.”
Next up are the shelves themselves: 3/4-inch oak hardwood panels, roughly 4 feet long and 16 inches deep. The total width I have to cover is 11'-8" and with 16" depth, that should give me enough room for the tiered bottle displays, enough strength for the load, and enough access so I’m not playing fragrance Jenga every time I reach for something in the back row. The brackets are mounted into the wall framing because drywall screws were not invited to this party. When you’re talking about dozens of glass bottles per shelf, the connection matters just as much as the bracket!
So far, we’re moving in the right direction. It’s not finished, it’s not pretty yet, and it definitely doesn’t look like the final Joe Average Fragrance Library, but the bones are there. The fragrance side of my brain is picturing all the bottles lined up beautifully, while the engineering side is still whispering, “Check the load path.”
Next up: the oak shelves arrive, the panels go on, and this thing starts looking a lot more real. Pray for the level. And the studs. Still praying for the studs.
