Match #42
Match #42 in the second-chance bracket is a pretty easy decision for me: Chanel Antaeus versus Montblanc Explorer Platinum.
Chanel Antaeus (1981, created by Jacques Polge) is unapologetically masculine and doesn't make any attempt to soften its edges. It's a bold, old-school blend of woods, patchouli, leather, oakmoss, and spices. Strong, earthy, and full of character, it's definitely a fragrance that announces itself.
Montblanc Explorer Platinum (2023, created by Bruno Jovanovic) is much lighter in style, although certainly not weak. Cedar, clary sage, and violet leaf give it a fresh, green, woody character that's pleasant and easy to wear. I like it well enough, but within the Explorer family, I'd reach for the original before Platinum.
And that makes today's elimination fairly straightforward. Explorer Platinum is a perfectly enjoyable fragrance, but Antaeus has considerably more depth, personality, and presence.
Chanel Antaeus survives and moves on in the second-chance bracket, while Montblanc Explorer Platinum is eliminated from the tournament.
