AI Layering- Introducing Ininum
I’ve recently come across something on Instagram rather fascinating in the world of fragrance: ININUM Fragrances.
What is ININUM?
I went down a rabbit hole and can give this; ININUM is a fragrance technology company founded in 2020 and headquartered in Ljubljana, Slovenia by founder and inventor Marko Matijevic and co-founder Simon Mohorovic. The device was formerly referred to as “Ninu.” Its concept is rather fascinating: instead of purchasing multiple bottles of fragrance, you use a single electronic device capable of blending different perfumes according to your preferences. Marlo’s feelings are, “It is not one perfume for a million people, but the other way around.”
The company presented its technology at CES and VivaTech in 20
As someone who enjoys the art of fragrance layering, I’ve always been intrigued by how two or more compositions interact with one another. How their notes complement, contrast, or occasionally compete, creating an aromatic experience that wasn’t necessarily intended by either perfumer.
ININUM introduces an interesting technological approach to that experience. A smart fragrance device utilizing three interchangeable fragrance PODs, allowing the wearer to adjust the proportions of each through an application and create different combinations from the same three fragrances.
Now THAT caught my attention.
How does it work? With assitance from AI.
The system combines three elements:
  • Fragrance PODs: Three interchangeable fragrance cartridges sit inside the device.
  • Smartphone application: With AI assist, you control the percentage of each fragrance in the mixture.
  • Precision dispensing: The device blends your selected proportions when you spray.
According to ININUM, three PODs can produce more than 100 fragrance combinations. The app also lets you save recipes and revisit them.
More on the AI
ININUM takes fragrance personalization a step further with AI-assisted technology. Its AI Scent Assistant recommends fragrance combinations based on mood, occasion, and personal preferences, while its AI Style Scanner can analyze your outfit (yeah, you take an selfie with your OOTD) and it suggests a complementary scent. A daily fragrance planner helps tailor your aromatic experience to different activities and environments. Combined with precision blending, adjustable fragrance ratios, and the ability to save favorite compositions for future use, ININUM introduces an intriguing marriage of artificial intelligence, technology, and the art of fragrance layering.
What are the fragrances? There are currently five:
  • Smoke Assassin- woody, dark, smoky cedar. This is immediately the one I'd want you to investigate, given your appreciation for tobacco, smoke, leather, and woods.
  • Spice Heist- warm cinnamon, sweetness, and spice. Potentially interesting alongside Smoke Assassin for a richer evening fragrance.
  • Waters of Sin- aquatic, fresh, clean. Designed as an easy everyday fragrance.
  • Sparkline- bright citrus over warm woods. A potentially versatile daytime fragrance.
  • Bloom Conspiracy- full florals with warm, oriental-style depth. (I see this could offer an interesting contrast when blended with darker fragrances.)
What fascinates me isn’t necessarily the fragrances themselves, but the technology behind blending them. The ability to experiment with ratios, save a particular combination, and reproduce it consistently opens up another dimension of fragrance exploration. However, it also got me thinking about something beyond blending finished fragrances.
Imagine having that same technology available for individual accords. Sandalwood, saffron, sage, patchouli, amber, leather, tobacco, and incense. The ability to explore how each contributes to a composition, adjusting their proportions while discovering how the resulting fragrance develops from its opening to its drydown.
Of course, perfumery is considerably more complex than simply combining aromatic ingredients. There’s chemistry, concentration, evaporation, balance, and the artistry of knowing when something needs more—or less.
And that’s precisely what makes the idea so fascinating to me.
What does it cost?
ININUM Smart Fragrance Set has an advertised price point of $189; the regular price $299 and includes the device, three 14 ml fragrance PODs, USB-C cable, and app access. There is premium access to the AI features free until 10/31. After that, there will be a subscription charge for the feature, to which I’m sure they provide options of monthly and annually. The company advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee and a one-year limited warranty, subject to return conditions.
I’m not looking to replace traditional perfumery or the talent behind it. Quite the opposite. I see technology like this as another opportunity to appreciate the craft, explore the possibilities, and perhaps develop a deeper understanding of what goes into creating something beautiful.
For now, ININUM has my curiosity. Whether the experience lives up to the concept remains to be seen.
After all, being a Scentmelier isn’t simply about what you wear. It’s about understanding, appreciating, and enjoying the aromatic journey.
