Forget the 30 year wars of the 17th century - Crimson vs Orange in my home state of Oklahoma is the real religious war (similar in @Alex Kilpatrick âs home state of Alabama-so I am sure he will get this post). In Oklahoma more energy, vitriol, strife, and general razzing surrounds whether one is a University of Oklahoma fan or an Oklahoma State fan than any other issue in the state. It truly looks like a religious war to outsiders. One could argue that it gets a whole lot more attention than church even here. In Oklahoma with a population of 4 million people itâs estimated 1,000,000 to 1,600,000 attend a church weekly (one of the nations highest percentage attendances). However at the game in Norman yesterday over 83,000 souls attended and the last big OU game against Michigan had over 9.5 million citizenâs watching it on television (more than double the size of the state). One of the most fun reads On this subject I recall was by the author Chad Gibbs: God and Football: faith and fanaticism in the SEC https://a.co/d/ckf8AkL SO when one of the other smaller schools in our State toppled one of these behemoths, itâs a really big deal. Friday night the University of Tulsa defeated Oklahoma State on their home field in Stillwater for the first time since 1951 (Tulsa had won on their home turf as recent as 1998). My minister, a UT graduate, my wife and I went to my favorite pub to watch it. And today for his benefit for church I combined a gold tie with a blue coat to celebrate the Golden Hurricanes victory.
