Mixing it up
Which of these fight styles do you think complements jiujitsu training the most for self defense? What about for sport?

@John Lang I love the foundation of systema being breath and fear management and relaxed movement. There seems to be quite a large spread in how it’s taught or there is a quality control issue. I have seen a lot of silly looking stuff but I’ve seen that with jiujitsu too. Never met Martin. His students look scared of him.

@Rich Q me too. 👍
How do you defend that?
@James Driskill How would you defend this attack? This attack seems a bit basic/brute-style at first glance, but I think it's not that easy to defend against. I know someone who use to do something very similar with the gi (the position, not the choke). First hand in the collar to start a cross collar choke and then shift weight to one side with a raised knee to avoid the upa. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUOhziIkf-a/ It can be my question for the Saturday live.

Great question. 👊
Hardest lesson🧐
What’s the hardest thing to teach in BJJ? Timing? Pressure? Grip fighting? Guard passing? Etc. As an instructor, I find teaching students how to relax and be calm is most challenging. For a few classes they’re doing great, but eventually go back to being tense. I don’t know if it’s something that can be taught, or if it’s a phase that they have to get through like we all did at one point. Curious to hear your thoughts 👊🏻

Definitely hard to teach people to relax. It can also be hard to teach patience. Many seem to want to move faster than what is in their best interest.
Focus for the week (slow down)
This week, move slowly. Not just in training. Give yourself extra time to do everything you normally do. Walk slowly around the house and in public. Breathe slowly. Reach for things slowly, blink slowly, speak slowly. Drive slowly. This is a meditation and if you struggle with anxiety it will calm your system and give you the time and presence to really tap into your senses. It’s amazing what we can accomplish with a little bit of awareness. As long as you’re not late because of it and you don’t feel more anxiety from the annoyed looks from your roommates or spouse. 😜 If this all seems too much, pick one thing and do it at 50% speed this week. Maybe eating, maybe teeth brushing….

@Alexis de Bretagne how about picking one and doing only that slowly? Like eating or breathing.

I am honored to assist grandmaster Rickson Gracie in sharing jiu jitsu concepts of self defense that guide us on and off the mats.
