Decolonisation of the IDGs a conversation that started at Caux
This message is from Rukmini who attended the Caux Forum Dear all, some of you here joined the conversation on decolonisation yesterday. Thank you! I have attempted to capture our thoughts and also added some more in this document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13GsSpR3EFRNSvKW42rRtFl0o3v-TfFRww0WGeZcvGTA/edit?usp=sharing At the moment it is a sort of a concept note. If the IDG Foundation is interested, we might be able to continue working on it as a collaborative working paper, perhaps. This group was created because several of you expressed the need to continue this conversation. We could also collectively figure where we want to take this ahead. Cheers, Rukmini

Birth, Life and our Mother
To our blessed Mothers for bringing each of us into this life - Happy Mother’s Day My Mom taught me respect, and generosity.Mine is alive and living in Ottawa, Canada. I’m thankful to technology that facilitates our regular chats… even when we don’t see things the same way, that’s ok. Where does your Mother live? What did she teach you?

My mum lives in Delta State, Nigeria and she taught me forgiveness, simplicity, hope, and the values that make family and meaningful relationships flourish ✨️ She is hardworking, warm, and deeply generous. From her, I learned how to create space for others wherever I find myself. Our family home was always open to people. Growing up, I was often asked to share my room because my mum welcomed and accommodated so many others. Without realizing it at the time, those experiences shaped in me a spirit of generosity, hospitality, and magnanimity. The many good friends and strong sense of community I enjoy today are gifts I owe largely to my mother and the values she lived every day

Human Skills for this AI era
We had such a rich conversation today exploring the intersection of AI, the heart, and the mind — sparked by Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind. His premise: the future belongs to the human capacities that logic can't replicate. Which feels urgent now that AI has the left-brain stuff pretty well covered. So we asked: what do we bring that's irreducibly human? What came up in our discussion: 🌍 Context and culture — AI generates content, but humans understand why this story, for these people, right now 🌸 Embodied and feminine knowing — Nadene named it: AI was largely built without women at the table. That shapes what gets captured and what gets flattened. 🤝 Presence — touch, laughter, tears. We can't prompt for that. 💡 Forward thinking + emotional connection — imagining futures we haven't lived yet, holding space for what's unspoken Pink also named six human skills for the AI era, I've added them in visuals below. The question we're sitting with: how do we cultivate these capacities in ourselves and in the leaders we work with? What's your answer? What do you bring that AI can't? 👇

There are some aspect of our lives that cannot be outsourced to AI. We can't outsource loving others, and being physically present with them. These are some of the things we cherish. In January, remember how grateful my mum was after I accompanied her to the hospital. I also enjoyed the moment we were together and afterwards I was happy too. When we replace these with AI, we only amplify the feeling of loneliness. Education at some level is fundamentally a human practice. This is why students want to return to school. They want to return because of the human interactions and experience they encounter and during the process learning takes place. If we take away the human aspect of teaching and replace it with AI, learning becomes boring and devoid of purpose. AI is a tool we all need to learn to use but not allow it take the driver's seat. Dear ID@Work members, I’d like to pose a provocative question to you: How do we free ourselves from leadership? Why is leadership problematic?Even if we try to improve it with new adjectives, could it be that the real solution is to retire it altogether?
