Men notice details—despite what we’ve been accused of for decades. Case in point: I walked out of a meeting yesterday and got hit with, “Hey Sir, I like your socks—they match your jacket.” That makes two senior leaders, in two weeks, who’ve zeroed in on my socks like it’s part of the command inspection checklist. Apparently, somewhere between strategy briefs and operational updates, we’ve added “coordinated hosiery” to the standard. The takeaway? You can spend years refining leadership, decision-making, and presence—but in the end, it’s the socks that close the deal.

I just finished grading one of my AP gov sections' practice exams. To see them finally be able to explain the powers of the bureaucracy, a crusade of mine to get them to understand this since Thanksgiving, was fantastic enough. But even better? Not a single one got below a 4. A 5 is the best you can do for those who don't do. This means at worst people, got a B on an exam that is even harder than most college exams, and quizzes them on information dating back to early August. Many students got a 5 outright.
