What do you value in a watch?

It’s a loaded question. But, over time, you develop personal taste and can find what you look for in a watch.

For me, I value several things: versatility, sizing, and a thin profile.

Early in my watch collecting journey, I had a real affinity for dress watches. I always liked the look of a leather strap paired with a minimalistic dial design. However, as I’ve grown, I’ve come to realize that those types of watches aren’t practical in my life. I sweat like a mad man, so leather straps get ruined very quickly. I also dress casually most days, and I don’t like the look of a leather strap with shorts and a t-shirt. I’ve always liked the look of bracelets because I can pair with any outfit. Also, I need something that can handle rugged day to day activities. It only makes sense that my Submariner became my grail and perfect daily watch.

Also, I’m very cognizant of sizing. Years ago, I owned an Orient Mako XL, and while it was a great watch, it was 46mm. On my wrist, it looked out of place and awkward. I wore it for a couple years, but ultimately had to move it on. I’m thankful for the experience because it gave me insight on what works and what doesn’t on my wrist.

Lastly, and most important lately is a thin case profile. The more I’ve collected, the more I’ve come to realize that thin watches are very special. Using the criteria above, I purchased an Erebus Origin 38 when they were first released. It’s a great watch, and on paper, it’s one I should wear more. But I don’t. Why? It’s 13mm thick on a 38mm case size. It’s just too chunky for my liking. I’ll probably be selling it soon because as I’ve come to grips with my personal taste, it’s just too chunky for the case profile for me.
