The Coat I Never Forgot
Good afternoon, gentlemen.
Fourteen years ago, when I was 14, I had a dark grey, double-breasted, military-style wool overcoat from H&M. It matched my style before I even knew what my style was. I wore it until the puppy-fat years made the fit… ambitious — and eventually it went to charity.
Last week I decided to go looking for it. Not just any coat — that coat. After some hunting, I actually found the same model second-hand: same cut, same attitude, just finally in a size that fits a grown man.
I’m giving it its first proper outing tonight for a mate’s birthday in London: grey herringbone waistcoat with matching trousers, brown Thursday wingtip boots, and my metal Armani watch.
Feels good bringing a piece of my younger self forward into the present — only sharper this time.
