Stripes on a suit separate?

I learned a while ago that wearing a striped jacket withe non-matching pants was a no-no, unless it was a regatta blazer. But, now I'm getting info that in certain circumstances, you can wear a suit separate with stripes and odd pants. Has anyone ever dabbled with this look?
