The political struggle surrounding Benjamin Netanyahu is often presented as a simple question of leadership: should Netanyahu remain prime minister, or should someone else replace him? But there is a deeper question beneath it: what happens to Israel if Netanyahu falls? For Israel’s Arab neighbors and regional actors, Netanyahu is not merely an individual politician. He represents the political center of gravity of Israel’s national camp a Likud-led right that is far less willing to accept the diplomatic assumptions that dominated Israeli politics for decades. That is why the struggle over Netanyahu matters beyond Netanyahu himself. The logic is straightforward: weaken Netanyahu, weaken Likud; weaken Likud, weaken the right; weaken the right, and the political space for a fundamentally different diplomatic direction opens. This does not mean that every criticism of Netanyahu is foreign-inspired, nor does it prove the existence of a coordinated Arab campaign to remove him. Israeli politics is full of legitimate domestic conflicts. But it would also be naïve to assume that regional powers have no interest in the outcome of those conflicts. States do not vote in Israeli elections. They cannot choose Israel’s prime minister directly. What they can do is shape narratives, cultivate relationships, influence public discourse, and support political outcomes that serve their strategic interests. And that is where the real battle begins. The question is not simply “Who will replace Netanyahu?” It is “What political Israel will emerge after Netanyahu?” A change of leader can be a change of policy. A change of policy can become a change of strategic direction. For that reason, the struggle over Netanyahu should not be viewed only as a personal political drama. It is also a struggle over the future balance between Israel’s national camp and those who seek to move Israeli policy in a different direction. The real prize is not Netanyahu. The real prize is what comes after him.
