Wave of violence in Mexico due to the death of “El Mencho.”
Following reports of the death of “El Mencho,” founder of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, a wave of violence has spread across multiple regions of Mexico. According to Reuters, the military operation triggered widespread retaliation, including torched vehicles and armed groups blocking major highways across more than half a dozen states.
Experts warn that this escalation was expected. As international organized crime specialist Vanda Felbab-Brown stated, “A tremendous amount of violence is going to happen,” reflecting the power these criminal groups have in destabilizing the country and unleashing destruction.
In response, local governments—including my city of Tijuana—have cancelled all school activities and urged caution among residents due to security concerns and public fear. For many civilians, daily life has been disrupted and in some cases, changed forever.
These events are a reminder of how deeply organized crime has a grip over the country.
Let’s hope this violence subsides quickly and that innocent civilians remain safe and unharmed.
We Mexicans will get through this together.
Con la cabeza en alto.
