Seven Months of Legal Limbo and Denial of Medical Care for Imprisoned Teacher and Labor Activist Abdolreza Amanifar
Abdolreza (Reza) Amanifar—an inspector for the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers' Trade Associations and a board member of the Bushehr Teachers' Trade Association—remains in detention nearly seven months after his arrest, still awaiting a judicial verdict.
According to the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers' Trade Associations, this activist has been in custody since April 2026. The Council describes the continued pre-trial detention of this teacher as a clear violation of the Code of Criminal Procedure, asserting that keeping him in such prolonged uncertainty constitutes a concrete instance of "punishment before trial."
This state of limbo persists despite the fact that Mr. Amanifar suffers from progressive polycystic kidney disease—a condition requiring regular consultations with a specialist, periodic testing, and continuous medical care. Reports indicate, however, that throughout his entire period of detention, he has been taken to a medical facility only once, and even then, he was transported while shackled in both handcuffs and leg irons.
Condemning this ongoing, unjust detention, the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers' Trade Associations stated that judicial and security authorities bear direct responsibility for any harm to the health or life of this ailing teacher. The Council has called for his detention order to be converted into bail—enabling his release for medical treatment—as well as for full access to specialized medical care, and ultimately, the unconditional release of Abdolreza Amanifar and all other imprisoned labor activists. #TeachersDoNotBelongInPrison #AbdolrezaAmanifar #RepressionOfTeachers #HumanRights
