Forests on the brink of destruction, dried-up rivers and wetlands, and damaged habitats bear witness to this devastation. In these circumstances, Iran's noble and devoted environmental guardians, despite a lack of resources and the absence of legal and livelihood support, continue to protect the nation's natural legacy—and sometimes lose their lives in the process. Payvand Naeimi and his cousin Borna Naeimi, two adherents of the Baha’i faith held in Kerman Central Prison, have been sentenced to a combined 20 years, six months, and one day in prison by the city’s Revolutionary Court. According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 5 of the Kerman Revolutionary Court recently sentenced Payvand Naeimi to 12 years, six months, and one day in prison and Borna Naeimi to eight years. The exact charges listed in the final verdicts have not been disclosed. However, Borna Naeimi was previously tried via video conference on charges including “acting against national security” and “forming a group with the intent to overthrow the government.” Security forces arrested Payvand Naeimi at his workplace on January 8, 2026. He was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture during detention, including a mock execution, in an attempt to extract forced confessions. State media subsequently broadcast these confessions on February 1, 2026. Borna Naeimi, 29, and the father of a three-year-old child, was arrested by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence agents on March 1, 2026. During interrogation and solitary confinement, he was also subjected to torture and at least two mock executions.

Islamic Republic authorities executed Farhad Tavan, a 44-year-old Kurdish prisoner and father of two, in Ilam Central Prison after he was sentenced to death on charges of "premeditated murder." Tavan was arrested two years earlier on charges of murdering his wife and subsequently sentenced to death. Iranian state media and outlets affiliated with the judiciary have not announced his execution.

Islamic Republic security authorities have detained two Lithuanian women, Daiva Zakažauskaitė and Erika Šlimaitė, who travelled to Iran as tourists. Their whereabouts and legal status remain unknown. According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Iranian authorities detained the two women on October 15, 2026, after they entered the country as tourists. The two Lithuanian nationals travelled from Lithuania to Turkey and then to Iran on October 7, 2026. According to Lithuanian police, their families lost contact with them on October 11. Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on October 27 that Iranian authorities had officially confirmed the detentions the previous day. Despite the confirmation, Lithuanian officials have been unable to establish direct contact with either woman or secure consular access. Iranian authorities have not disclosed the reasons for their detention, any charges against them, or their place of detention. The detention of foreign nationals, denial of consular access and concealment of detainees’ whereabouts raise serious concerns about arbitrary detention and possible state hostage-taking by Iranian authorities.
