SPEAKING PART 3
PART 1 : INTRODUCTION In part 3, you have the opportunity to discuss topic areas, related to part 2, in much more depth. This part of the test, focuses on your ability to express and justify opinions and to analyze, discuss and speculate about issues. The examiner will help you do this by asking you questions that explore the topic area in more depth. In our part 2 article, we looked at three topic areas. The long turn topic is always related to the part 3 topic area. For example, if your long turn is about your teacher, part 3 will be a general discussion about education. Look at the possible part 3 discussion areas related to the long turns you practiced in the part 2 article. ** Picture 1 SPEAK ABOUT TOPICS IN GENERAL In part 3, you are expected to discuss all topics in a general manner. If you try and talk about yourself and your family, the examiner will steer you away from these familiar topics and will encourage you to speak in a general way. Remember that you have already talked about familiar topics in part 1 and part 2. PART 3 is your chance to show the examiner that you can discuss general topics, giving your opinion and ideas on what is being discussed. Rather than talking about yourself, you can use the following phrases to extend the discussion in a more general way: - In my country most people believe that... - If I compare my country to Australia, the way we [farm/travel/work/eat/celebrate] is quite different - The local communities in my country... - Thinking about this in general, the main reason why most people... - From my perspective, if I take my country as an example... - I have seen this happen in my city and it's a major issue. To deal with this problem, we should... - There are a lot of examples of this in my country.

The charts below show the proportion of holidaymakers using four different types of accommodation in three different years. ==========[final version]========== The three pie charts illustrate the percentages of people who lived in different kinds of accommodation during holidays in 1988, 1998, and 2008. It is noticeable that staying with family was the most popular option over the three years, and its popularity declined gradually. Overall, the proportion of holidaymakers who chose(choosing)to stay with family and camp decreased during the given period, whereas the percentage of people who opted(opting) for rental apartments and hotels increased during the same period. To examine the pie charts meticulously, the percentage of people staying(who stayed) with family occupied the biggest share in these three years, with the proportion dropping from 52% in 1988 to 44% in 2008. WT2: What is your opinion?
QUESTION: Some people think that students should learn art in school, while others believe it is a waste of time. What is your opinion? RESPONSE: While some individuals believe that students ought to learn art in school, others argue that it is just a waste of time. In my opinion, students should definitely learn art in school because it contributes significantly to a child’s overall development. Firstly, studying art nurtures creativity and imagination in young learners. When students draw, paint, or create designs, they learn to express their thoughts and emotions in unique ways. This process also enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills. For instance, students who engage in artistic activities often perform better in other subjects, such as writing stories or designing experiments in science, because they are accustomed to generating original ideas. Therefore, learning art equips students with skills that are valuable across multiple areas of life. Secondly, art education provides students with insights into different cultures and historical periods. By exploring traditional paintings, sculptures, or crafts, students gain a deeper understanding of how people lived in the past and what they valued. Personally, during high school, my art teacher encouraged us to study traditional Taiwanese art, which helped me appreciate our cultural heritage and understand the lifestyles of people in previous generations. This experience not only increased my cultural awareness but also taught me to respect and value diversity. In conclusion, I firmly believe that art should remain an integral part of school education. It allows students to express themselves creatively, develop critical thinking, and gain a greater understanding of culture and history. These skills are crucial for cultivating well-rounded individuals capable of adapting to future challenges.
