What Conventional Doctors Do
Mainstream medicine relies heavily on TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) to evaluate thyroid function.
- If TSH is high → usually hypothyroidism.
- If TSH is low → usually hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism (TSH high, FT4 low)-
- Physicians often prescribe levothyroxine (Synthroid) → synthetic T4.
- Assumption: the body will convert T4 → T3 properly in peripheral tissues.
- Follow-up labs focus on TSH (mainly) and sometimes FT4.
- Free T3 and Reverse T3 are measured less often in conventional practice.
Hyperthyroidism (TSH low, FT4/T3 high)-
- Anti-thyroid medications to block thyroid hormone production.
- Radioactive iodine ablation (destroys thyroid tissue to reduce hormone output).
- Surgery (thyroidectomy) leads to partial or full removal, usually if nodules, goiter, or cancer risk.
- After these, patients often end up hypothyroid and require lifelong levothyroxine.
A deeper approach measures-
- TSH
- Free T4
- Free T3
- Reverse T3
- Thyroid antibodies (TPO, TgAb, TSI) if autoimmune is suspected
FitnHealthy Forever - it's nice to have options isn't it?
- A thyroid that is not functioning optimally is a Symptom, not necessarily a cause.
- Look at conversion issues (liver, gut, nutrient status, stress).
- Check out combination therapy (T4 + T3) if conversion is poor.
- Address root causes- nutrient deficiencies, gut health, adrenal stress, lifestyle.
