How to pick up the guitar and just play

The video below shows my full answer. But if you want the short steps:

Learn lots of songs.
Learn to move around the guitar neck using stacks, rectangles, the pentatonic scale, etc.
Take your favorite licks from songs and make them your own. Use the fretboard shapes to help you.

Remember: Don’t be too hard on yourself. Your new ideas won’t always sound great, and that’s okay. What matters is to travel at the speed of inspiration.
