Decided to finally give my cool fancy samples another try, and today i went with Ebene Fume from the Enigmatic Woods line of the Tom Ford Private Blend.
Gotta say, i absolutely love this scent. With that being said, this is not for everyone.
It’s definitely not a super super animalic niche level scent, but it isn’t Dior Sauvage either. It’s unique while still having slight mass appealing elements, which is a great scent for standing out, while also not killing anyone around you lol.
Going into this, i think i finally realized that simply using a tester strip at a boutique store is NOT an accurate way to know what it really smells like, because actually trying it on my skin was extremely different from the impression i got at the Tom Ford store.
I was expecting something really smoky, deep, incense heavy, and slightly, slightly sweet from the reviews i’ve heard, and yeah, it does have all of those, but it isn’t just warm spicy elements either, it blends a lot of coolness, with an almost soapy, clean undertone layered with the spicy and incense-y notes, which is likely from the violet leaf and pepper in the opening. It legit reminds me of Dreft Baby Laundry Detergent wrapped in incense, wood, and leather.
It opens up with spicy palo santo and incense in the opening layered with a cooler, soapier violet leaf, which is bridged nicely by the black pepper note. The fresher, cleaner notes are transitioned nicely by papyrus, cade oil, labdanum, and slight rose in the heart, while the spicier notes are bottlenecked into a nice leather note. Then the cooler notes settle away, and the heavier leather note spreads into the base of resin, guaiac, and ebony.
Overall this is a really really good scent. Great performance too, not nuclear, but noticeable, with good projection. It’s something that wants to make itself known without demanding it. It’s a tale of duality, blending attention attracting but not demanding, with cool and warm notes blending together. Overall this is a fantastic scent that deserves all of the hype. Definitely not blind buy safe, but a beautiful fragrance from Tom Ford
