I've been using Encre Noire à L'Extreme sporadically for a month now, and I can say with confidence that I love the smell. This is a very dark and woody fragrance that does not turn left or right. It stays on target and lasts very long. Whenever I want a serious and bitter smell, I reach for this and it gets the job done.
The scent is that of dark wood, maybe earthy. My nose is not trained to detect any of the declared notes, but to me, it smells like hazelnut shells, and I detect a hidden sweetness underneath. I do not really perceive the smoke or the incense many reviewers mention.
Still, it smells classy, elegant, mysterious, serious, masculine and bold. Not a compliment-getter, not even the kind that earns you stares or smiles, even though it projects a lot. My wife says that when I wear this, I carry with me certain atmosphere, not only that of a man, but of a whole lifestyle. She says it feels like stepping into a different room when I approach her, a charming, warm and quaint space filled with luxurious wooden furniture and neat rows of leather-bound books.
I like wearing this on cloudy, chilly days, as it evokes the feeling of walking through an ancient forest. I recommend pairing it with a classic style. Not overly formal, but timeless. Perhaps something an oldschool detective or writer might wear. It is an addictive scent; I often find myself sniffing my wrists. It also stays on your clothes for several days, so you might catch your wife sniffing your shirts too.
The fragrance is very affordable, and I do not think it would do any harm to add it to your collection if you're looking for something unique and mysterious.
