Farmers Market Season
๐ŸŒฝ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฅ• Farmers Market Season is Here! ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ…
Who else is taking advantage of your local farmers markets this summer? ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ I'd love to see your pictures and videos in the comments!
One of my favorite things about summer is buying fresh, local food directly from the people who grow it. Supporting our local farmers and ranchers helps strengthen our communities while providing access to some of the freshest foods available. ๐Ÿšœโค๏ธ
Much of the produce in a typical grocery store travels hundreds or even thousands of miles before reaching our plates. Some fruits and vegetables are harvested before they are fully ripe so they can survive shipping, storage, and time on store shelves.
In contrast, produce from a local farmer is often picked just a day or two before you buy it. It may have a little healthy dirt on it, it may not look perfectly uniform, and it may not last quite as long on your counterโ€”but that's often because it hasn't spent weeks traveling and sitting in storage. ๐ŸŒฑ
The difference in taste can be incredible! ๐Ÿ…
Have you ever compared a grocery store tomato to one picked fresh from a farm or backyard garden? There is almost no comparison. A fresh-picked tomato is usually juicier, sweeter, richer in flavor, and actually tastes like a tomato! The same is true for peaches, strawberries, sweet corn, and many other fruits and vegetables.
Freshness can also affect nutrition. For example:
๐Ÿฅฌ Spinach begins losing vitamin C soon after harvest, so spinach picked recently may retain more of this important nutrient.
๐ŸŒฝ Sweet corn starts converting its natural sugars into starch almost immediately after it is picked. That's why corn purchased directly from a local farm often tastes noticeably sweeter than corn that has spent days in transportation and storage.
๐Ÿ“ Strawberries harvested at peak ripeness are often richer in flavor and may contain higher levels of vitamin C and antioxidants than berries picked early for shipping.
Eating foods that are naturally in season also gives us more variety throughout the year and helps us reconnect with the rhythms of nature. Whether it's sweet berries and fresh greens in the summer or squash and root vegetables in the fall, seasonal foods often provide the best flavor and freshness. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒป
So tell me...what's your favorite farmers market find? Fresh peaches? Sweet corn? Local honey? Grass-fed beef? Farm fresh eggs? ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿ‘
